I had a Honda CRZ with a service coupon Honda would change the oil for 30 bucks. Plus a free car wash check brake wear etc. Could not buy the supplies for that. My days of changing oil are over.
Yep, but what quality or type of oil were you getting for that price? I bet it was not full synthetic high-quality oil. If you plan on keeping your car for a long while, I wouldn't trust that cheap oil change.

I remember my dad (an ol' school mechanic) who always had more business than he could handle based on referrals would always school me "that motor oil is motor oil" but he was always happy to change his customers oil. He never "fully" changed his personal or work vehicles oil, he would instead replace the filter at his determination when it "was time" and top off with fresh cheapest oil he could find. I remember his Dodge work van with over 300,000 miles still running strong with this approach. Fortunately or unfortunately I didn't follow his direction on this subject.

Just be careful with the oil you choose to use, Ford has specific oil spec requirements for the Ecoboost that many oils including Pennzoil Platinum, Ultra Platinum and standard Mobil 1 don't meet (yet). The oil spec they require is formulated to be less vulnerable to low speed preignition and to promote better wear of timing chain guides, both of which have been problems for ecoboost motors. Using non spec oil could present a problem in the event of a warranty claim.
No they don't. They use Motorcraft 5w-30 full synthetic which conforms to ILSAC GF-6 specifications that came out in May 2020.

Basically - they specify the most recent standard from ILSAC

Which.......all major oils conform to today - even SuperTech from Walmart.

So DIYers can safely use basically any engine oil of choice and especially Mobil1, Penzoil (Ultra) Platinum, or other high grade oils.

Straight from the owners manual:

Use oil that meets the defined specification and viscosity grade.
If you do not use oil that meets the defined specification and viscosity grade, it could result in:
  • Component damage that your vehicle warranty does not cover.
  • Longer engine cranking periods.
  • Increased emission levels.
  • Reduced vehicle performance.
  • Reduced fuel economy.

An oil that displays this symbol conforms to current engine, emission system and fuel economy performance standards of ILSAC.
We recommend Motorcraft® motor oil for your vehicle. If Motorcraft® oil is not available, use motor oils of the recommended viscosity grade that display the API Certification Mark for gasoline engines.
Do not use supplemental engine oil additives because they are unnecessary and could lead to engine damage that your vehicle warranty does not cover.

When you pull up Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil (WSS-M2C961-A1-XO-5W30-Q1SP) you see:

https://www.motorcraft.com/us/en_us...-oil/sae-5w-30-full-synthetic-motor-oils.html

  • Motorcraft® SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil is a premium-quality passenger car motor oil recommended by Ford Motor Company meeting warranty requirements. It is API Certified for gasoline engine service ILSAC GF-6 and meets API SP/Resource Conserving

List of ILSAC GF-6 oils:

Plus all of Penzoil

What is the oil spec requirement?

Any info on that? I run Royal Purple in the Bronco.
As far as I can tell Royal Purple doesn't meet the latest Ford spec requirements. Disregard, I was reading a data sheet from 2019. According to the newest data sheet Royal Purple 5w-30 does meet the A1 spec

Sorry - EDITED my post while you were replying.

EDIT 2X - Holy sh*t Ford has some ridiculously convoluted specifications. Still - I think they all meet it now.

Wow. Spent too much time on oil specs this morning........

Ecoboost motors have pretty much universally had issues with low speed preignition and excess wear on timing chain guides. Their new specs are supposed to help combat both those issues but we'll see......

It surprised the heck out of me to see it running 5w-30 to be honest.

Previous home owner built a grease pit into the garage floor. FOUR inch creasoted bridge planks (on the right) sit in a recess around the pit. Even has a 120 volt outlet. Deep enough to stand in and reach UP to work on car. There is mark on the wall that is exactly the middle of the pit, so you can lean to the right a bit and hit the middle on the first try. I leave one plank in the slots and move it around to drain fluids into catch pans.

I’ve been watching some YouTube videos on Maverick maintenance, most of which are from the States.

I’m curious, how much is an oil change at a Ford dealership in your area? Canada and the US.

I drive an F150 currently and at a dealer an oil change is $115 Canadian, or $85 USD. It takes 7.7qt of oil. If I was to buy my own oil and filter it would be over $115 CAD. That’s using a good name brand oil (Mobile 1, Pennzoil) and not a budget brand.

Do those of you who do your own oil changes just like to use your preferred brand of oil and trust only yourself to do maintenance on your vehicle? Unless oil is much cheaper in the States, I don’t see a financial benefit to doing your own oil changes.
For me, my time is more valuable than the effort it takes to go drop my truck at the dealer for service. Otherwise I am making one trip to the parts store for supplies, another for waste disposal and having to get my own hands dirty. I am not and never will be a "take it only to the dealer guy" but heaven forbid they damage the truck or screw something up, it is on them. Any owner doing the same just cost themselves money. Plus the service record is at the dealer in case of future issues. And I can tell you for a fact that if you have an out of warranty failure that you want Fords assistance with, and they see that for the life of the truck you have spent $0 with the dealer for service and they will likely tell you to pound sand.

I don't myself. Former jeep wrangler guy so I got all the tools.

I get the synthetic oil from Canadian Tire on sale (mobile one or pennzoil) for $50. Filter is another 15-20$ depending on the brand. Fyi Benson's carries Wix filters! Change the oil 3000-5000km as I do pure city driving so gets dirty fast.

Well it was semi synthetic. The car went 250K mikes before I wrecked it. Did not burn oil, 8K between changes never had to add oil. Not one thing ever went wrong on it. 42 MPG hybrid. Other than my grubby hands wore out the steering wheel. Which has happened to 3 of the cars I have owned.

I take my vehicles exclusively to fast lube places where they give you a free tiny cup of soda while you wait in your car...it's all about refreshment!
That Coke must conform to Ford Spec WSS-896238-sugar-bad-for-you-XYZ, or else your warranty is void.

It usually cost me around $30 USD to perform a oil change on my Maverick using a Motorcraft filter and name brand oil (I buy extra when it is on sale). I like doing it myself so I know it is done right. And, with the Fumoto oil drain valve installed, it is a very simple process.
Which Fumoto valve did you purchase? Please provide part number. I've been curious which valve fits best.
