There are different things to consider here. Oil sitting in a closed bottle will not deteriorate, but oil sitting in an engine could.

Someone who only drives short distances would probably benefit from changing yearly since there's a higher chance of oil dilution due to fuel contanination.

Someone who drives long enough to reach normal operating temperature will not see the same issue; in this case, going by mileage would be totally fine, even if it takes more than a year.

I just got my first oil change on my 22 XLT EB Maverick, because it only has 1600 miles on it, because the instrument oil indicator said it was time for an oil change. I got the truck Dec 30th 2022.
Your maverick is gonna live longer than any of us at that rate.

Wait ... You're supposed to change oil?
That's what a friend said, when the engine blew in his Saturn Vue. He thought when he switched to synthetic oil, he no longer had to do oil changes.

Basically they took oil sitting on a shelf for 14 years and it was fine, they then took cars with oil sitting many years and again no problems. After many tests they concluded it was mileage not age of oil, 6-12 months oil change is a waste of money.
I worked for a company that produced oil filters and their corporate vehicles never had oil changes just filters to prove a point. This was many years ago when oil was not like today's oil and these vehicles went 200,000 miles. They claimed oil never wears out only breaks down from high heat and pressure like in race cars.

Oil (under normal operating temperatures, etc.) won't deteriorate just sitting around... if not exposed to air.

In a parked engine, it's not air tight but close to air tight. So will deteriorate too slowly for anyone to notice.

It is the additives, particularly the base that neutralizes acids produced during combustion that wears out. This is why PAY to see base number on your used oil analysis.

Wear metals only tell you how worn your engine is.

If you want to know how good your oil is, you need to know the base number!

Escape Hybrid could go 25,000 miles on Mobil 1 and the UOA was A-OK.

Um.....I am one those people.....worse I have a hybrid and still freak out when I am at 5 months and oil life says good till xyz...
yeah I'm on the same boat lol.
I'm at ~6800 miles, and the ford app is saying ~2500 more miles to go before my next oil change.

It just feels weird to do oil changes so infrequently.

Clean oil sitting sure no issues. Dirty oil sitting I highly disagree. Plus low mileage drivers forget condensation that never gets burned off either.

Hey don't change your oil I don't care. Plenty of evidence on youtube of engine tear downs of that not being a good choice. The choice is yours. Kinda irrelevant if your a I get a new car every 3 to 5 years.

I mean, if it's never been used it's not going to be "bad". If it's been used then the additives and metals in the engine along with condensation will be a good reason to change it out. Once you get fuel vapors mixing with the oil it causes that condensation and even just sitting over time becomes sludge. It completely changes the viscosity. If it's being ran hot constantly then it's thinner but if it sits for long periods it becomes thicker. That's why you see all those older vehicles get the oil changed and they run just fine (disregarding any potential loss in pressure of course). They just need to burn off any excess still in the engine and then change again, good as new.

I just got my first analysis on the EB back and I'll be reporting back after the 3rd one, but so far the flashpoint is definitely a consideration for earlier changes. Every time I've dones analysis' I've gone with a 3-4k rule for the first 3 and then you can make your assessment - especially on new engines.

The oil companies going to have the author bumped off and articles retracted. :)

It's a great experiment, I've always wonder this for a very long time. But it only affect those who drive very little. I never worked close to home that I have to think about this. I think home and auto insurance is a bigger scam.

They need to cycle it through heat range. I promise you a car that makes a lot of short trips of 5 miles a day will have sludge by 2000 miles.

Seems like half the people commenting never read the article. This is data from Blackstone which people on this website quote like its the Bible. They tested many cars with oil sitting in their engines (the same oil) for years, a Porsche, Lincoln etc.

They can buy mine if they want. Engine is in amazing condition, the crappy rust points on the unibody are not after 20 years ☹. Wish I had known about the flaw earlier in its 20 year life.
