Seems like half the people commenting never read the article. This is data from Blackstone which people on this website quote like its the Bible. They tested many cars with oil sitting in their engines (the same oil) for years, a Porsche, Lincoln etc.
My wife's Bronco bought in April 2022 has 5300 miles and just got a change yesterday. Previous change was March 2023 at 3700 miles.

FordPass yells at you if you don't change at least once every 12 months, so I do it. It also thinks that 10k change intervals are OK but I don't let my Maverick get near that with a puny-ass 8 oz spin-on filter. It also blows oil out of the PCV and is typically a half quart low after 7k miles, so I aim for 5k to 7k intervals.

It comes down to each one of our personal preferences. Some still use the old 3000 miles or 3 months whichever comes first. Personally I like using the hour meter method. 60 mile is = to 1 hour.
With that, my oil change comes every 84 hours (5040 miles). That way every minute the engine runs is accounted for. I use the Motorcraft Synthetic Blend, because that's what Ford recommends. I wouldn't claim anyone to be wrong, do what your comfortable with. It's your time and money. Good Luck and best wishes.

Battery change intervals.
😝

I mean, should you change batteries when yours is 85% effective? 65% effective? Or 50% effective?

People value the oil analysis (their service). Their "comments" are not the bible. What works for the average might not work for your engine.

If they say something like "fuel made up 1% of this sample which is probably the reason for the thin viscosity", later followed by "The engine is wearing well from what we can see, as metals compare well with universal averages that are based on ~6,300-mile runs" but you sent it in at 3k, it could easily be enough to justify early changes.

People don't quote much of anything they say, they just share sample results and make their own judgement calls.

Also, the last paragraph of that article said "Naturally, there are exceptions to rigid mileage schedules". There are always exceptions - and more variables than the opinion piece cared to discuss in it's 3 paragraphs.

An oil change is cheaper than a new motor……
Your statement does not provide evidence that changing at the manufacturer's recommended interval will cause a blown engine.

Probably because that's not what they said. Which recommendation btw? There are usually 2 or 3 different ones depending on how you drive...

It's obviously implied by the statement.
And how about choosing the one that fits your driving style? :cautious:

Plenty of evidence on youtube of engine tear downs of that not being a good choice.
Of all that evidence on YouTube how many let the car sit without running it for 1-3 years or how many only drove for 1-5k a year without changing oil? How many of those YouTubers deal with tons of oil from a lot of different industries and really know oil?

FWIW I changed my oil (full synth) on my F150 ever 3k-5k because of the Turbo's. Which was about every three months. If I didn't hit those number within a year.. I wouldn't' have change it. Younger me would have, but older me not so much.

Motorcycle helmet manufactures also say to change your helmet every 5 years even if it's just sitting on a shelf as they "expire".
They think we are as stupid as the oil companies.
They work the safety aspect - how sure are you that the oil in your $25,000 or $50,000 vehicle is good - or your helmet on your (put a price on it) head?
I have my helmet from 1983.

Oil (under normal operating temperatures, etc.) won't deteriorate just sitting around... if not exposed to air.
This is not correct. Drums of oil sitting around will sweat internally and ruin the oil. We dump them all the time at my job due to moisture contamination.

I've heard many times through the years that old oil got acidity & hurt bearings, etc........ Don't know who to believe any more but I'll still change mine regularly.
