I have two BMW’s that we drive very little, a 2014 M235 manual I drive 1,200 miles a year. BMW/Mini used to say every two years, I really think for very low mileage drivers its just to get your vehicle in the dealership to get additional business and you are doing no harm. They have the same scam on brake fluid, from the factory its ok for 3 years (the same time your free maintenance runs out) but after that its two years when we have to pay for it. Some manufacturers are 5 years or longer.

The oil companies going to have the author bumped off and articles retracted. :)

Speaking about oil here is novel about oil
https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/

Some Turbine engines oil changes are on conditions, while others are every 200 hours.

Oil change intervals are driven by filter contamination and oil consumption / aspiration. Any quality full synthetic will still test good when it's time to change the filter.

This is well-known and not controversial.

I only have 1600 miles on mine since I got it in July. If I go by mileage, I won't need an oil change for a couple of years. 😬

Btw, I do plan on doing annual oil changes whether it needs it or not.

I will say if these findings are accurate, it will certainly alleviate my anxiety.

Here's the deal, we don't put a ton of miles on our cars. Our explorer was meant to get an oil change back in late October. But it's only traveled about 1,500 miles since the last oil change, engine kept at below 4k RPMs as much as possible, usually try to keep engine RPMs at 1,500 or so unless we need to accelerate aggressively. Never towed with it, racked up 30,000 miles over the last 8 plus years.

We just want to do whatever we can to take care of our cars. I'm looking into getting the transmission fluid and coolant changed for the first time on our explorer, even if people have told me you don't have to until it reaches 60k, that's how much we care about our cars. If the age of oil doesn't matter that much, it means I won't need to stress as much. So that's good.

Many years ago I worked at the engine lab of one the major Oil Companies and I can tell you it is about use and environmental conditions and not age. I have a 2004 BMW and it's oil change indicator uses use/cycles and not age like the modern one's. People only started to change their oil at 3k after Jiffy Lube told them so. Synthetics are way better than the dyno oils. Shorter intervals is only good for the dealer

I just got my first oil change on my 22 XLT EB Maverick, because it only has 1600 miles on it, because the instrument oil indicator said it was time for an oil change. I got the truck Dec 30th 2022.
