This may belong in the Maverick vs. forum instead. So apologies in advance if it should. However, my question is that I’m really toying with the idea of swapping my Tacoma out for a Maverick. I have some pros and concerns listed below. What are your thoughts on the two given the info I’ve provided? I would be getting the FX4 2.0L Evoboost or possibly a Tremor down the road once availability becomes more prevalent.

My driving habits: My daily commute it roughly 50 miles round trip and I don’t need the rugged off road capabilities, however I am certain that in the last 10 years of being a Tacoma owner I have probably spent roughly 5% of my driving in places I’m pretty sure a Maverick would not reach.

Argument to keep Tacoma:
  • Off road capability - as mentioned above, the Maverick would suffice for 95% or off roading I do, however it’s always the last 5% that are the most memorable
  • More camper options - only current option for Maverick is a GFC. Unfortunately, I would require a camper.
  • Toyota reliability/longevity - I have no concerns about my Tacoma lasting to 250-300K without any catastrophic failures
  • Equity in resell value
Argument to get Maverick:
  • Significant improvement in MPG’s - after my research I would guess about 22-24mpg after lift, wheels, and other mods (my Tacoma gets 18mpg with current mods for reference)
  • Would be able to pocket some cash when I sell Tacoma
Main argument against Tacoma:
  • Horrible mpg for someone who drives 20,000-25,000 miles a year (Maverick would save about $700-$1000 on an annual basis)
Main/concern against Maverick:
  • Ford reliability - I’m bias towards Toyota’s reliability as I’ve been fortunate enough to never have any major issue. Moving to a company like Ford worries slightly

Tremor is actually readily available to switch your MY23 order to. If you don't have an MY23 order you're unlikely to get any MY23 Maverick unless you pay ADM and find one on a lot of a dealership.

With that said -

Maverick - 25mpg @ 25,000 miles annually @ $3.00 gal = $3,000.00
Tacoma - 18mpg @25,000 miles annually@ $3.00 gal = 4,166.67

Without knowing what Tacoma you have - unless it is an Off-road or a TRD - you don't have a rear locker and a Tremor would do better on that last 5% you speak of than your current lifted Taco.

Without knowing what Tacoma you have (I assume it's pretty new if you're going to "pocket some cash" from the trade) - Tacoma/4Runner reliability took a massive hit with their frame recall.

My 2010 Taco's frame literally disintegrated and lots of Tacos snapped in half. Toyota replaced my frame only after a class action lawsuit.

But if you're worried about Ford your mind is already made up and you should keep your high reliability Toyota.

Rando internet message board strangers are not going to make you feel warm and fuzzy about Ford.

Stick with a Tacoma, especially when they redesign with more fuel efficient engine options. 4WL alone is worth it for that 5%. There are some people here who are seriously delusional about what the Maverick even in Tremor variety would be capable of. Tacoma has much better flexibility, aftermarket support, capability and you may see significant improvements in fuel mileage with the next gen further widening the gap between the two. Most people looking for rugged off road are not even considering the Maverick, they're going straight to Ranger Tremor, Tacoma TRD Pro, Chevy Colorado ZR2

No locker = no off roading. Give me 31" tires and a locker vs 35" and 4L

Although if towing capacity is a criteria then Tremor probably isn't the route since it's going to be limited to 2k.

Edit: Unless you mean in-bed/topper since you mention the GFC.

Unfortunately nobody knows what the upcoming redesigned Tacoma has in store. If I did any variety of off roading I would have gone with a Tacoma. Remember how old that platform is and it's only really had major refreshes.

Post a picture of what you consider to be offroading. Most people's definition is forest service roads. Either way, it sounds like the Tacoma is the right vehicle for you.

I would venture to say that the rear locker will not come standard on the next-gen taco and will be reserved for Off road or TRD Pro tims.

OP was saying keep their current Taco or trade it in for a Maverick, potentially a Tremor. If OP doesn't have have a rear locker on his Taco - the Tremor could likely be better suited off-road.

Arguments against Tacoma:
Small cabin and difficult for some people to get in and out of. Uncomfortable seating position as well.

+1 I would take my Prius to most places people call "off roading". LOL

Just saying if I were OP I would wait to see what the new Tacoma looks like. Could be pretty significant improvements in fuel economy given the fact that the Toyota 3.5 has been around and almost unchanged forever. I don't the Tremor is going to get him through his 5% unless it's nothing more than torn up fire roads.

Not many places at Tacoma can go that a Tremor couldn't. It's not like he's talking about a Wrangler or something. I'd keep the Tacoma because unless there's a compelling reason I drive vehicles till I can't anymore. But I don't think for his use cases, assuming there's no significant towing, one vehicle would be much better than the other

I don't miss my 2013 Tacoma TRD Sport access cab 4x4 at all. The Mav is a lot more comfortable and pleasant to drive. Admittedly I lost that rugged off-road capability, but for MY driving needs the Maverick works a lot better.

That 50 mile commute would certainly get a lot more comfortable & efficient with a Mav. I honestly don't know how people can stand Tacomas for more than about 10 minutes, but that's just me.

If that 5% extreme off-road travel is most important to you, better stick with the torture chamber.

Thanks for the reply. Short story, long I should have mentioned that my previous Tacoma was a 2016 Sport that was totaled by a drunk driver. Due to insurance shenanigans I had to hastily bought a 2017 Off-road with less than 20k miles on it that I now own. As far as I know my frame was not recalled, though I haven’t done extensive research (yet) as I don’t live in an area that used much salt or other corrosives on the road. A very good point I have not throughly researched though, so thank you. That is the very reason I started this thread and reached out to randos on message boards lol

As far as the off-reading thing goes, I’m more worried about high clearance than I am about the locking diffs. While I’ve used it, I can count the number of times I’ve needed a locking/partial locking diff on one hand and honestly don’t see myself ever getting into a situation where I would want to use the crawl control feature l have on my OR.

I also have never owned a Ford and don’t necessarily have any negative experience towards them in regards to reliability nor do I have my mind made up, I just have anecdotally experienced Toyota and Honda as somewhat of a benchmark for reliability and thought it might be noteworthy.

In regards to the comfort factor of the Tacoma; i have a double cab and half of the back is built pit for my dog/camping so leg room and comfort are non-issues.
