I know it’s probably difficult to answer, but how confident would you be doing something like this with a Maverick FX4 with 2” lift and 245/65/17’s?
I don't think it's necessarily a question of confidence. I personally have run my Maverick through similar and worse, but it's much tougher than in a Tacoma with a 2" lift. Not to mention that the routing of the exhaust is garbage and the metal is already rusting in less than a year.

I’ve owned 3 Tacomas and will soon have 2 Mavericks. I did it mostly because of the demand of the Mavericks and to get a different experience.

the FX4s chin hurts it off road. as to the video that trail is similar to my family hunting camp road if you'd add a few ruts. but heck my sister gets in and out of there in her outback, slow and steady but she gets there.
that's soft roading

I would keep the taco but if you can get maverick on good deal and you want better Mpg then get the maverick

I would take a Ford Contour over a Tacoma. I've slept in the back seat of one and have has worse nights sleep before.

I dont see anything in a toyota except for the inherent taller suspension of a frame. A Ranger would do you far better and not look over puffed. Tacomas are under powered, under sprung(TuRD has a 900lb payload :ROFLMAO:), the bodywork is all bulgy and needlessly vulnerable, the reliability is anecdotal to anyone who has ever maintained a car properly, also they are too big except where it counts(the inside).

+1 I would take my Prius to most places people call "off roading". LOL
I used to blaze trails occasionally in a 89 Beretta GT pizza delivery car.

If you're paying Taco money for the Maverick, and you want to tow a camper consistently, I'd stick with the Taco. If you're coming in at MSRP or below and like the on-road capabilities of the Mav, that's something to think about. The way prices are inflated right now, it's gonna take a lot of months of saving $50-$75 a month in gas to chew up all the negative equity a lot of folks who overpaid on the lot are going to eat at some point. On the bright side, maybe by the time you can get your hands on one, the specs you need will be a little closer to even between the two :)

This is what I would consider typical off-reading. Tacoma has a 2” level on 265/75/16 for reference.
lol....that "trail" is better than most of the township roads down here in SE Ohio....

Yeah not sure what people are making an issue out of the Maverick handling that. I was doing trails way harder than that in my Cherokee Altitude Edition with no issues. It's about going slow and picking the right line. Do it wrong and the Tacoma would be leaving parts behind. Do it right and the Maverick (or Subaru or Jeep Cherokee or other crossover off roader) is good to go.

That path was what these off road vehicles and variants are intended for. If it was rock crawling it would be off limits, but the Tacoma would be a bad fit as well.

You wouldn't be able to get a tremor and 4k towing together, so you have to decide if marginally better off road performance is worth the trade off for 2k more towing over standard capacity.

Basically, if you need an efficient daily driver that does some truck stuff and has a decent AWD system to keep you from getting stuck on soft ground the mav is the way to go. It handles and rides more like a car/suv than a body on frame truck ever will. I was pleasantly surprised at the ride quality and handling. It's fun to drive.

If you want to off road, the mav is not really the right vehicle, Tremor or no. It's meant to keep you from getting stuck in a little mud or snow, that's all.

Reliability remains an issue as it's already been back to the dealer twice and am waiting on the air bag recall - not a plus.

By the way, you mentioned something about recalls but there is no deep dive required - all you need is the VIN and you can enter it into NHTSA site.

All this talk that a Maverick is incapable of off roading is crazy talk. There are videos all over of the Maverick doing some hairy stuff, and that was before the Tremor came out. The Tremor is basically the Bronco Sport without the camera and reduced angles. Angles are always sacrificed on trucks, and people have off road without cameras for decades. And the Bronco Sport participates in Off Roadeo...

For any reasonable ranch road, fire road, or typical double track the Maverick FX4 is just fine. Tremor could handle some technical stuff as well. They aren't a Wrangler or Bronco, but aren't designed to be. But all this talk that the AWD is just for people who want comfort in snow is crazy.

They said the same thing about Eagles in their day.
