Before the 24 Tacoma came out.... I really hoped that there was going to be a higher MPG version of it that was going to be introduced. When they finally announced the engine line up I was disappointed since I knew there would be nothing that would touch the Maverick MPG. When I was able to finally sit in a 24 Tacoma I knew it was no longer in the running. Although I like the overall dash design and the materials in the Tacoma better, the lack of room in the cabin was a big factor to me.

I have never owned a Toyota so I can not really speak to reliability. I only know of the perceived reliability which is a strong influence for sure. I do also suspect that just like anything they have issues that are dismissed because it's a Toyota. "It's been great!" "Didn't you have X,Y,Z done?" "Oh yeah, but it's a Toyota it will last forever"

My family and myself have experience with Honda's. The current 2013 Accord has been pretty good, but others have been less so. One Accord went through 2 transmissions. Another Accord had an issue with burning up the spark plug every X miles. Decided to get rid of that one when we were out of state visiting my wife's family. My father in law did graphic's work on cars and had a relationship with the Honda dealer in town and we went back and talked to the tech and they urged us to push when we got back home to have the short block replaced. But Honda usually has high perceived quality and holds values well.

I have owned a few Ford's and they have been less reliable than most vehicles I have owned and always ended up using the warranty and extended warranty so I made sure to get an ESP when I purchased my Maverick and also have in my mind that when a Toyota version comes out I would likely purchase it partly because of my track record with Fords and not knowing if I think it will last long term.

The best vehicle I have ever owned was one I didn't expect much out of or plan to keep for so long but was a 2014 Nissan Rogue 213K miles I went ahead and sold it because it needed a catalytic converter and figured I would just put that money into something new

that's a little better and on the whole a complimentary article but in the end a opinion piece, and everyone has one.
Do you know what auto maker has had the biggest NTSB fine for safety related violations? Not opinion but documented fact. To help you out the criminal fine was $1.2 Billion. That's dieselgate big.

New York Times 2014
"Eric H. Holder Jr., the United States attorney general, talked in impassioned tones on Wednesday about Toyota’s behavior in hiding safety defects from the public, calling it “shameful” and a “blatant disregard” for the law. A $1.2 billion criminal penalty, the largest ever for a carmaker in the United States, was imposed."
USDOJ 2021
"The U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that the United States has filed and simultaneously settled a civil lawsuit against Toyota Motor Corporation" $180 million for emissions violations, another criminal case

Where's the blame there? Toyota has a history of slow walking or outright hiding safety defects. Looking at recent large recalls going back years I believe Toyota has learned little and are still reactive while Ford seems more proactive addressing issues head on.

Recalls are a damn nuance to the consumer but I'll put my trust in a company that actually addresses those issues.

The only car review that matters is the number of customers writing checks at dealerships. And the Tacoma (no, I'm not a fanboy and I've never owned a Tacoma) has sold 250,000 a year for the last six years. So I'm pretty sure Toyota isn't sweating because a bunch of Maverick fan boys are trashing their best-selling truck.

so by your estimation Ford Maverick and F series are the undisputed champs, best in class.

Luckily, we don't have to worry about frame rot on our Mavericks. No frame, no rot.
I wonder how the paper thin sheet metal that makes up the uni-body will fair.
I live 1/10th of a mile from the beach, so i have constant exposure to salt air. Will keep you posted on this, but on Sunday it will be two full years of ownership and not a rust spot to be found.
