Manual Transmission. If it was offered, would you choose a Standard?

Both my current vehicles are manual transmission, fun to drive…. But with the consideration of a new vehicle it has to be automatic as taking a break from shifting would be nice every once in a while

I learned to drive in a '61 Chevy with a 3-speed column shifter.

I think the last time I drove one was in the 90’s. Was an 80’s Chevy pickup.

Almost didn't buy the Maverick bc no manual option.

I'm 31 and this will be my first automatic car, but I guess that's life. Wife can't/won't drive manual so it's nice to have a car she can drive if hers goes down for whatever reason, but I still would have ordered with a manual if it was a possibility. Guess I need to pick up a project car now.

My first experience with a manual is in a Ford F100 with 3 on the tree. My friend made me hold it steady on an incline using the clutch. It was a great lesson and I helped him change the clutch later.

The incoming Mav will be my first automatic vehicle. It will be less fun to drive.

My fondest memories was of my dad teaching me to drive in his Chevy pickup. Also with 3 on the tree. Him putting me at a red light on a hill and telling me to "drive, son!" You learn quickly ! Have had several sticks since-most recently the '21 Miata GT that's sitting in my garage until spring. There's nothing like curvy country roads with a manual. But..... Can't wait for my Maverick as my "automatic DD"

I might understand that for those that commute in heavy congestion without better alternative routes. I am fortunate to have a rural, winding, countryside option. That said, the options for DD's with manual have dwindled. It is now relegated to the enthusiast's buyers, e.g. weekend toys.

I guess the only one who would like a manual for my DD.....had sticks most of my life and still have one. I honestly don't even think about shifting anymore. It's a natural action. I even find my self trying to shift my autos every now and then

No, no. I am another. I purchased two vehicles just because each was the last year of manual availability for their models (2016 CX-5 and 2018 Chevy Colorado). I drove each interchangeably.
If the Mavrick were available with a manual, I would sell the Hybrid and purchase the Ecoboost MT-6, even though I'm not a fan of turbos (that would make me a turbofan )

I drove for 10 years with manual. It can be fun but daily driver automatic. Manual is a dead technology. If I went out and purchased a new sports car today I would buy auto. I would actually like an electric sports car.

The first car I owned was in 1967 when I lived in Germany. It was a 61 Peugeot and had a 4 speed on the column. For everyday driving now, I prefer automatics but when I want to have fun, I drive the vehicle you see on the left. It has a 5 speed manual. I found out that they (Polaris) has started putting some kind of automatics in Slingshots beginning with the 2020 model because their sales were down due to all the people that could not drive a stick. The salesperson was surprised when she told me that all they had was a stick shift and I told her that was exactly what I wanted.

I've had 11 vehicles since 1972, all but two were manuals. Have always preferred that feeling of "Oneness" with the machine. An automatic just puts a degree of separation between car and driver.
I have to admit to one longterm drawback of my preference though:
at age 67, my left knee is larger (and crotchety) compared to the right one, LOL. All those years commuting in Chicago rush-hour traffic, working the clutch pedal, definitely took a toll on it.
But I'd choose a manual today, if only it were offered.
My current vehicle is a 6-speed manual. Drives like a go-cart.

It wouldn’t be faster… but it would be a lot more fun.

It’s the one thing I miss from my Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. I’ve always driven standard. Even my first vehicle was my dads 1983 Chevy S10 King Cab - same size as this - with a 4 speed manual on a tree.
