Manual Transmission. If it was offered, would you choose a Standard?

Would you have ordered with a manual transmission?

A nostalgic thought, but no thanks.

This will be the first AT vehicle that I've owned in 35 years of driving. Getting an AT because I want my wife to be comfortable driving it, and quite frankly an auto gets better mpg and is just easier. The novelty of a stick has finally worn off. ;-)

This will be the first Auto Transmission, I have ever owned, I have to admit I am a little worried that I will hate the Auto, I test drove a Nissan Frontier and the tranny was a piece of garbage, kept me from buying the truck. But with the Atlanta traffic getting worse every day, I decided to take a gamble, that I will like the 8 speed in the Mav! If not Im sure I can sell it, Ha

Manual transmission, I would actually pay an adder for a 6 or 7 speed manual. So very few options with AWD, turbo, with a manual transmission.

Can't really speak about the mav since I don't have one yet, but auto transmissions have come a long way. If you're used to clutching it will take some getting used to but they are generally pretty good. The 8 speed has been used in multiple vehicles and has a decent reputation.

If you are getting a hybrid it's a totally different animal.

I hear a lot of folks saying that automatics are greatly improved and driving a manual sucks in traffic. Can't help with your commute, I choose two-lane country highway "over the river and through the woods" roads just for the commute. As for the transmission improvements, manuals have evolved too. With hill hold and light hydraulic clutches, its a no-nevermind, even in the foothills of the Appalachians. I hope i can handle the eCVT.

I'm curious how many people would have gone with a good ole' fashion manual transmission if Ford offered it with the Maverick.

I love driving stick and contribute my love of cars to being taught how to drive a stick when I was young. I was curious how it worked and the more I learned the more interested I was. But now I'm in my late 20s and have to drive the same boring route every day, manual is becoming more of a chore (especially in traffic). I'd much rather have my fun car be a manual and my daily be an Auto. Luckily Ford is still putting them in Mustangs and Bronco's, but I can see that disappearing soon.

What do you think?
I have owed manuals from the time I was 16. I love them. I will miss my manual that I am trading in for the Maverick. However I would not want a manual with a truck. Towing and anything more the street driving is torture on a clutch and much better handled with an auto. I so wish I could afford the Maverick without having to trade in my car.

No, just driving 30 years on the world’s largest parking lot interstate 64 thorough a section that is the main path from DC to the beach, 20 miles at least 3 tines a week, going from 1st, 2nd, never getting pass 25 mph, back to first, finally got to my left knee, lots of pain, couldn't bend it, had to switch to wife's automatic, sold the stick, had to buy an automatic truck.

When it takes an hour and a half to 2 hours for 20 miles speed limit 65, you will rethink the fun.

I do miss my 1970 French Simca, electric clutch, but reality here, these new automatic driven transmission shift better all the time, gas mileage best you can get.

Manuals, you need to factor cost.

Manuals with need to be designed for a very niche market, add $$$, they are an additional assembly line insert, these adds cost to the manufacturing, guess who that gets passed along to?

The gear shifter step change feel in some vehicles, someone here commented on hating, I have read simulatated shift points were put in because people expected it, It's a market gimmick, basically give people what they want, just to sell cars.

That CVT shift points takes away from the CVT transmission`s point of having it. With a smooth non stepping transmission it can stay at the optimum speed for torque and mpgs. With stepping points there is always a small pause, lost of performance, by the design of how it has to works.

Ah, tried googling to find the original article, could not find it, but here is one.

www.motorbiscuit.com/why-do-cvt-transmissions-simulate-shifts/

PS, how many people want that manual shifter on the column? :)

Remember those? A hippie van, a real tobacco pickup farm truck with a flat head 6, column shift 3 speed

Can you say 1952 Studebaker, had the privilege of driving one for where I worked, it had been stored in a barn for over a decade, less then 1,000 miles, column shift, foot button required to start, split windshield, with curve wrapped around back glass, windshieldwipers at the top.

Gee, Ford, please hybrid one of these, in that body style.

Speed, mpg ain't everything.

I voted in favor of a manual transmission a few months ago, before I had my hybrid Maverick. I've always driven a stick because I hate the hunting, rubber-banding, poorly-times revs, etc. of automatic transmissons--whether conventional or CVT.

But, after driving my hybrid Maverick for a couple of weeks, I've changed my vote. The eCVT is truly a marvel of engineering that delivers smooth, consistent, and immediate power. I don't miss my manual transmission one bit--which is something that I never imagined that I'd say.

Big smile. That would just be top of the list.

Definitely, I've lost two cars due to automatic transmission failure. Just don't trust them anymore.

I learned to drive in a '61 Chevy with a 3-speed column shifter.
