Other than occasionally overshooting Reverse, when shifting it from D to R, and landing it in park occasionally, I'm fine with the rotary/dial shifter. Just took a couple of days to become accustomed to the dial, as opposed to the slider in the past several vehicles. Actually took me longer for the push-button start to become second nature, as I kept reaching for the key, even when turning the truck off.

Yet nobody mentioned the orientation of the wiper stalk or layout of the steering wheel buttons, and how Ford is reverse of nearly every other vehicle made on both counts. - Interesting.

Not sure if I'd fall into the older drivers category yet, but am over 60.

I used up all my shifter hate on the Chrysler push button shifter in the 50's.
I remember my mom’s Plymouth Valiant had push button shifting but I am guessing the OP is probably referring to something like what is in the Tesla Cyber Truck.

While waiting a year for my Maverick I thought for sure I would have no issue with the dial shifter. When the truck came in I bought and paid for it without even test driving it. You see it booked at KBB at the time for 5 grand over what I was paying so I said no way I am leaving without this truck.

My suspicions about liking the dial shifter were confirmed in very short order. I love it. It is cool looking and IMHO goes perfectly with the awesome looking and totally different XLT interior. They just complement each other.

Buy the damn Maverick and don't deprive yourself of one superb little truck and don't waste time thinking about what could have been but what is. (y) ;)

The beauty of the dial shifter is that it is difficult to make a serious mistake. Dog paw or child pushes the shifter to reverse? No problem, truck slows down. Back in the day if you dropped the trans to reverse at speed the transmission would lock up or maybe blow up. I’m all in on the dial shifter.

Good point on the steering wheel layout. I currently drive an older truck and a newer SUV. One has a steering wheel shifter and key ignition while the other has a floor shifter and push button start. I'm constantly forgetting which vehicle I'm in. Sounds like exchanging the truck for a Maverick is not going to make things much better with the steering wheel buttons being reversed and the dial shifter. At least having the brake hold on both vehicles will stop me from drifting into the vehicle in front of me at stop lights.

I'm fine with the dial shifter in the maverick. The wife's expedition has the dial shifter also. But I do agree I like the looks of the e-shifter in the 4x4 versions of the 2024 Ranger Lariat and Raptor trims. Real sporty looking and low profile.

Honestly - the e shifter is what made me order the Ranger Lariat (don't worry - no build date in sight and I'm not buying anyway).

Me thinks the MY25 Bronco will have an e-shifter as well.

I love the dial shifter, it's super intuitive, easy to operate without ever looking down and frees up space without a phallic looking thing getting in the way. I don't understand the hate for it, I think some people are just stubborn and opposed to embracing new ideas which means they'll never understand them and will just keep feeding their bias that it's inferior.
It's not intuitive at all. Isnt a solid connection, spins around past its ends. It's also just out of reach from how I sit. I have also bumped it and had I spin from being caught on a phone cord. They should have just freed up all the space and made a column shifter or a simple push button on the wheel for drive, neutral and reverse. Since park is somewhat automatic anyways.

I think it's super intuitive, want to go to drive? Turn it all the way to the right a bunch of clicks. Want to go from drive to reverse? Two clicks to the left. Want to go to park? Turn the knob all the way to the left a bunch of clicks. I don't even have to look down at it especially since the gear indicator is right on your IPC. I think it's a great progression. I'm so glad it's not in the way of accessing the place I store my credentials, etc (below the HVAC controls). The whole reason for this kind of shifter is basically because people are generally pretty absent minded. It prevents someone from accidentally leaving their vehicle in neutral and running themselves over with their own vehicle (like that unfortunate Russian actor), it's shift by wire so the computer knows that if your seatbelt is off and your door opens it automatically shifts it to park. Can't do that with a mechanical column shifter. I have been driving my Mav for over a year and a half now and I haven't had a single issue with bumping the dial shifter. I would never want to go back to a protruding shifter, they look horrible, they get in the way and they're just unnecessary.

The Dial shifter allows for unlimited manspreading . The shit handle always gets in the way of the right knee. That’s why it’s better . ….

This would be nice. I'd like this if the manual buttons were removed and you could just slap it left or right to change gears. My old RAM had that. Like this:

Ford Maverick E shifter vs dial shifter imag

Certainly wouldn't mind the option!

Our '21 Escape PHEV has a nicer dial shifter than the Mav. Solid detents & stops on ' D'. Mav rotates all around.
My 22 Escape spun all around, our 20 escape did not.
My '22 was infinite scroll as well. But the dial itself was definitely nicer. The rubber on the Mavericks really isn't necessary and it kind of attracts debris to it in a sticky sort of way. I've seen some pretty gross looking ones from folks who are not the cleanest. Not really an issue on the Escapes dial. It hides it well and cleans up easier.

I would immediately buy a Maverick if it had an E shifter instead of the dial shifter which I consider cumbersome; especially to older drivers. What say you?
Hmmm. Both are just a switch one can be as cumbersome as the other.
Just how is the dial shifter a problem?

Everything you said, sorry to say, I am the exact opposite. A dial is just too overly complicated. Counting clicks and all. Not to mention the clicks are super faint. A straight linear movement is more natural. Going around the dial feels more like I should be fine tuning audio. To turn the dial you use every muscle, bone, and joint in your hand. Something usually reserved for precise complex tasks. Using pretty much just a hooked hand, and a push or pull movement of the elbow, wrist, and shoulder, you can operate a handled shifter. It engages your arm more but overall its a movement that requires less muscle commands. Im also not particularly fond of the truck going into park when you open the door. When offroad or doing work it is often useful to pen the door to see your position and I have no reason to be wearing a belt at that time. It just doesnt feel great to me and takes as almost as much away from the driving experience as the difference between an automatic and manual transmission.
