Playing devil’s advocate, what’s the estimated labor cost as well on a battery replacement?
I have heard that it's about $300-$500 average.

I'm pretty sure I am going to be buying a Maverick hybrid. I'm curious if anyone has had to buy a hybrid battery before, not just for the maverick mind you? How much do they cost to replace?
My daughter's Prius needed one a while back, it cost about $1500.

My take on it is I won't have to pay below 100k miles, as the battery is warranted that long..

If I drive a hybrid for 100k miles and get the advertised combined 37 mpg ill burn 2,702 gallons.

If I have an ecoboost for that same 100k miles and get the advertised combined 26 mpg ill burn 3,846 gallons.

The difference in gas of 1,144 gallons is substantial and ecoboost costs $435 more as well. If gas averages $4 a gallon for that 100k miles your cost difference over time would be $5,011. Odds are that would be enough in gas savings to offset the cost of a replacement battery.

If the economics of a battery change is your primary concern and the hybrid would check all your other boxes id say go hybrid. (Thats what I did, so my opinion may be a bit biased)

after the 8/yr, 100,000 mile warranty expires on the hybrid battery, I have no idea what they will cost. Pharrell Williams was singing "Happy" and the Hunger Games was on the big screen 8 years ago.

If you don't consider how expensive the engine is to replace when buying a car, then there's no reason to fret over the battery failing IMO. The Hybrid system also has a much longer warranty than the engine so there's that to think of also.

I didn't work on a ton of hybrids in my career, but I never had to replace a failed battery pack. eCVT's and engines, on the other hand...

eCVT's more than other automatic transmissions? Which models did you often work on?

My friend and I both had a 2013 Ford C-max. I sold mine in December, 2019 to buy an EV. I had 85,000 miles and never had a problem with my hybrid battery. My friend sold hers and January of this year with 140,000 miles and never had a problem with hers. I her transmission went out So I think you’re going to run into other normal systems that have problems before the hybrid battery.

Hard to say since I doubt anyone has ever done it on a Maverick.

I did a search for replacement labor costs on Prius and got numbers between $250 and $900 for labor. But I also see total costs between $1,000 and $4,100. Depends on Prius model and year. And some of those numbers included the plug-in models which have a substantially larger battery.

Bottom line is there are components (gas engine or eCVT) that will cost more to replace if they fail out of warranty. And the battery system is warranted much longer anyway.

People spreading alarm about replacing hybrid batteries is just FUD. EV batteries on the other hand might be a different story because the cost is considerably higher.

Indeed. The oldest Mavericks have been on the road less than a year and people are already trying to math out replacement cost on the battery which is under warranty for a long time. Also acting like hybrid technology debuted with the Maverick and isn’t decades old now.

Gotta love forums.

Something else to think about is that Ford is going to be coming out with lithium iron batteries, which are (according to the interview) cheaper to make and use less constrained raw materials. I believe he specifically mentioned nickel.

By the time we need batteries for our hybrid Mavericks there very well might be a drop in replacement thats both cheaper and better. Hard to tell what the future will bring.

8 years is a long time. Picture what you were up to in 2014...

So the thing with these batteries- you're just charging them while braking and using them to push the generator to get going again (SUPER generally speaking). It's not like they're charged from a wall then used for extensive time or need to hold a charge for months.

It's really quite shocking when you look at how small they are compared to the vehicle. Nothing like I was expecting!

I feel like I'm being nitpicky here, but I don't agree with the way you've framed this even though I like the spirit of what you're saying heh.

Most of the charging isn't done from braking, it's from the ICE. On a good day, you might get up to 20% of your electrical energy back from regen braking. The rest of the battery charge is lost on peripheral electrical components, air resistance, tire friction, heat losses, etc. Most of the energy needed to charge the battery will come from the gas engine.

They do indeed hold a charge for months, unless something is wrong.
