What Troubles Me About the Maverick...

I was in the automobile business for 27 years. I was there for the launch of the 1980 Chevy citation which was supposed to be the vehicle of the future. I think anybody that was alive then knows how that came out LOL. Trust me the industry has come a long way. Starting with CAD and going all the way through design R&D research electronic innovation wind tunnel testing and everything else the worst car made today is better than the best car that was manufactured in 2000. For what it's worth Chevy sent a Citation to Japan to have their engineers inspect it they found 174 manufacturing defects that would have not passed their final assembly inspection. I rest my case. Anyway I'm very happy with my new Maverick the only major defect I have found is a misalignment of the tailgate for The Gap exceeds design parameters on the right side I think I can live with that. I could of course take it back to the dealer and have them correct it. I think I can reach the desired effect with a rubber mallet.

Not sure what the Kia Soul is doing in this list of other shit buckets. It's actually a fine car. Have you driven the turbo? The fun to dollar ratio is amazing.

I bought a Kia Soul in 2011, gave it to my kid in 2015 and she's had it since. The hood never goes up (except for oil changes) and the only time it goes in the air is for brakes and tires (knock wood). 120,000 miles and still runs like a champ.

I've had zero issues with my Maverick, and I definitely don't baby it!

I actually don't do anything with it. When do you guys think I'll get scheduled? I'm borrowing my dad's Freestar for Chrisssake!

I got an Ecosport recently as a service loaner while my Maverick was getting looked at (gas tank, deep sleep alert). It was not a great experience. The engine was SO loud at 65mph compared to the Mav. The seats were uncomfortable. The fit and finish in the cabin was laughable compared to the Mav interior. Cheap feeling plastic throughout. It did have options you can't get on the Mav like navigation. I think they do that to make it seem "nicer" despite its drawbacks. The worst part? The backup camera was noticeably clearer on the Ecosport. Not great...but better. Seemed like a cruel joke.


I also echo the Kia Soul love. That's a good car and a cut above the other breadbox options that have been around over the years.

Had 14 soul & 20 soul, both manual transmission, more comfortable than my 13 mustang gt. Really loved the souls, but just sold the 20 after owning 2-3/4 years with 27 k miles on it & sold for $3000 profit. Ordered a maverick xlt fwd eco boost in January. Daughter also ordered one. Who knows when we'll see them. Hoping quality is there @ the good price point. Manual trans. Souls were great loved driving if didn't have mustang I'd probably kept because love driving stick shift. Not for time being out with knee replacement. Anxious for maverick to arrive someday.

Initially took the 2.0 ecoboost for test drive couldn't believe the pep, it really took off. I did take a test drive w/hybrid, decided to stick with ecoboost fwd. Sounds like the current maverick owners are happy and that's encouraging. Best wishes Maverick owners & all in the waiting game.

All the Soul love in this thread is great. I had a 2013 Soul; great car - never had problems with it. A nice daily driver and road trip vehicle too.

I would still have mine if Kias weren't such theft target where I live.

I guess I can't complain too much. I was able to sell it for a great price and the timing coincided with the Maverick release. Now I just need to actually get my Maverick.

Kia Souls are the state car of Florida. Also the city car of Asheville. I had three Souls and loved them. I was massively pissed Kia reserved the second generation electric Soul for Europe. Also that they never gave it AWD. The Soul is truly "class above", as pretty much every auto journalist will tell you. It's been through 3 generations, and each one was a massive improvement. And bulletproof in my experience.

One thing I will knock on the Soul. I had the second gen turbo with DCT. I'm not a huge fan of DCT transmissions. They'll be in the wrong gear at the wrong time, and they'll hesitate when you most need them. And that's the #1 reason I'm passing on the Santa Cruz turbo.

What has happened with mine is after rain and the back doors opened water will run to the front of the door and drip straight down into the car. It almost looks like the weatherstripping is to short, if it was longer, it would channel the water down the inside lip of the door,

Quite literally, time will tell.

But it's also worth noting the Maverick is only a "$20,000" vehicle in the hybrid power train with XL trim and zero options. The truck I ordered, an EB with AWD, FX4 and Lux Package, is just shade under $31,000. Do I expect it to perform like a $50,000 vehicle? No. But do I expect it to perform like a $20,000 vehicle? No!

The EB engine in the Maverick is a proven performer on many other Ford models. Clearly the interior is not opulent, and we've seen complaints about the paint. Other "issues" are regularly reported here on this forum, though this is to be expected of any model in its first year.

Truth be told, I am breaking one of my self-imposed cardinal rules of car buying on this one by ordering a Maverick, as I swear no one should purchase a vehicle in the first year of production. The offsetting factor, of course, is that there is NO OTHER TRUCK I can get with all-wheel drive, off-road package, heated seats and steering wheel, etc., for anywhere close to the price.

So, I guess in the end you are right. The Maverick is either going to prove to be, as so many auto journalists have delcared, "the value of the decade" or "the steal of the century," or we're all going to look back in 5-8 years and say, "Boy, that was an overhyped rust bucket. Glad I didn't get sucked into that trap."

I suppose as someone who has a Maverick on order and is really excited about getting it, I am betting on the former. And since we're here on the Maverick Truck Club, I'm betting I have lots of company!

2 of the 3 most reliable cars I have had have been 1st year fords, and I usually keep a car for 10 years or more.
