Some of the early Atkinson Hybrid Engines (built at Ford’s Chihuahua Engine Plant) had chunks of metal in the oil that were big enough to blow holes through the engine block & oil pan. Starting fires oops 😬

Recalled and fixes at the factory put in place. One hopes 😅
When you say early, when was that?.. say about 1983? 😂😂😂

Gary,
If you're changing the oil every 5,000 miles. How many miles of actual engine run time, do you think, that equate to on a hybrid Maverick ?
That's a damn good question.

The original Maverick engine was bulletproof. The original Hybrid Maverick engine was the one blowing chunks. Same engine used in yours BTW. 🤮

Modern engines with all the mods required for EPA & CARB States are potential walking time bombs. Toyota, GM, Ford, etc have had to recall & replace more engines these days than they ever had to in your dads era!

Definitely some truth to that. I can’t remember ever having recalls on cars in the 70s and 80s when I started driving. You do know I’m clowning a little bit. I realize that there can be contaminants in the oil and there can be engines that do blow up, but I do have a lot of faith in this Maverick hybrid to run it 10,000 miles between changes easily. I think I mentioned before I had my first change at 9500….my next at 19,000 and my third at 28,500. So far so good on my way to 200,000. 😂😂😂

Those engines had spun bearings due to oil starvation due to machining detritus in the galleries, the same way that GM, Hyundai and Toyota engines have been failing. Then the rods exit the block and you have a fire.

“Machining detritus in the galleries” sure sounds more professional than “chunks in the oil” - although it describes the same issue;)

Do you know how the problem was fixed? Appreciate your insights.

Smaller oil galleries & thinner oil are motivated by modern environmental concerns. Small price to pay, unless you neglect oil changes & damage your engine.

This is just to FYI not to argue. But I recall (pun intended) recalls in the 70s and 80s.

AI Overview

Ford Motor Company
had the most significant, high-volume recalls in the 1970s and 1980s, primarily driven by the massive 1981 recall of 21 million vehicles. This 1981 action addressed a "park-to-reverse" transmission defect on 1970–1980 models, making it one of the largest safety recalls in history.
HowStuffWorks +4
  • Key 70s/80s Recalls: The 21-million-vehicle recall (1981) involved Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln models.
  • The "Park-to-Reverse" Defect: A faulty transmission gear allowed vehicles to slip into reverse when in park, blamed for thousands of accidents.
  • Ford Pinto Recall (1978/1979): The Ford Pinto was notorious for fuel tank failures, resulting in a recall of 1.5 million vehicles.
  • Impact: While other manufacturers, such as General Motors, had significant recalls during this period, Ford's immense 1981 recall (often referred to as a 1981 Ford recall by Statista) makes them the most impacted manufacturer of that era.

Here is mine from a nearly 12,000 mile interval, following the OLM. Will test again next time.. truck currently has 24,100 miles, OLM says 65% or 7,700 miles.

Ford Maverick Blackstone Labs Oil Analysis Comparison at 10k Miles Oil Report Redacted

Whoever said Blackstone is "AI".. I nearly fell out of my chair with how hard I rolled my eyes. If anything you don't like or agree with is brushed off as AI slop, essentially, then you are a prisoner to your own mind. Good news is that not being that way is very much a choice.

Looks great! I wouldn't call a 50% increase in mileage a "smidge"!

You do see they recommended 7k oil changes, or did you skip that part?
This would be a habit of Blackstone, if all numbers look peachy, pick a number 2-4k ahead of the mileage on this report.

Did my first oil change today at 900 miles. Sending a sample off to Blackstone also. I‘ll post the report.
What??? You waited until 900 miles? I don’t even think Blackstone will test that since you went past 500. 🥴🥴🥴

I meant oil dilution of course. The TSB is for fuel in the oil.

BTW, I received results from same oil change but from SPEEDiagnostix that said the dilution was in the ok range - but the “wear metals” in my oil were a “yellow alert” level. Not a “red alert” and normal for an engine with less than 2000 miles.

They recommended next change in 3000 miles. I’ll actually do it sooner since I only drive about 2000/yr. My OLM was down to 46% after only 900 miles of driving.

I’m looking forward to what Blackstone finds…
Save your $ and I'll tell it to you straight:

Putting 2k miles per year on your Maverick means it won't matter what oil you run or test - your truck will never suffer an oil-related issue and will outlive you.
