Do you tow , do you idle a lot or drive heavy stop and go traffic?
Is it dusty or sandy or drive on unpaved roads?
Short trips under 10 miles in below freezing temps which I do. . Do you go off-road.
If you do you any of these you are now severe service.

The guys on youtube who pull apart engines on a regular basis and have proof of oil changes at recommended oil change time/miles must all work for big oil. Its all a con.
Yep....it's amazing how many people think there are chunks of metal floating around in our "Break in" and regular oil. Kind of scary.....LOL :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Unlike the GM system, the Ford OLM takes engine loads and temperatures into account when figuring out remaining life. You don't need to track it yourself unless you're using substandard oil.
If they used the same engineers to devise a system that supposedly tells an owner the remaining "life" of the oil as the "engineers" that designed the 12v battery charging (and rapid discharging), I'll stick to a regular oil change based upon mileage.

Or at least write down the miles/date of your last oil change in case the OLM loses its memory for one reason or another or another:)

Breakin contamination used to be a real thing. Some people (like me) still treat our engines like it's 1970 and "waste" our money on a first oil change. Not necessary with the highly machined engines of today, but hey, what does it hurt?
Plus, at least with all of my pre-hybrid engines that was the switchover to full synthetic from dino oil.

Oil analysis results and $4 or 5$ will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks. IMHO the coffee is probably of more value than the oil analysis............... Result summaries are obviously written by AI, and I suspect red flags based on results are very few and far between.:unsure: Just sayin..........

Wow couple of science deniers here. The oil geek would be sad with both of you. Ya know oil filters are a recent thing, not installed on mass produced cars till the 1940's. Conspiracy theory I SAY! Stuff floating in your oil! outragous.

I like the video you posted. The bottom line is change the oil in a Maverick every 5,000 miles and simply ignore the dumb "sensor/timer" that Ford calls an "oil life monitor". That is, unless you don't care about the longevity of the engine.

Gary,
If you're changing the oil every 5,000 miles. How many miles of actual engine run time, do you think, that equates to on a hybrid Maverick?

Who cares about calculating that figure. Since the engine in a hybrid is constantly starting and stopping, and we live in an area with very hot summers with 90-100+ days each year above 100F (we've already had a 97F day before the actual end of Winter on March 21) I consider our use being exactly what Ford calls "severe use". The schedule in the owner's manual, to maintain warranty, in severe use, is to change the oil every 5,000 miles, or 1 year, whichever comes first. An oil change is cheap insurance to maintain the longevity of our vehicles.

Well actually - he was discussing the break-in scenario, and the huge ramp down to normal figures for wear metals. (and break-in oil, sure thought mine had a green tinge to it like others)

Why I did mine at 1631 miles, which was about 1000 on the engine when it mattered.
(my 2nd change was per OLM that was NOT reset on 1st - 9221-1631=7590, less than 5k on engine)

After those drop down, likely even more for the 3rd oil change in his example - what is being protected against that kills longevity?

We've had plenty of hybrid oil reports at those long distances that prove his point - metals ain't there high enough to matter.
Can't use those reports to prove a point if you aren't going to use them all!

what is your procedure when you get a bad reading?
Depends on which reading is bad.

If my results show high oil dilution, I’ll bring it to my dealer to do a high pressure fuel pump test outlined in the appropriate TSB.

If my metals are high, I’ll consider that part of normal engine break in. My truck is still young.

If my metals in the oil spike down the road or results show coolant in my oil - then my procedure would include contacting Carvana.

I was just wondering.
I live 65 miles from Death Valley. It gets warm here. To me, it means that my engine reaches operating temperature 180°+ faster🤣

2 years ago I saw this on my Buick

If I'm not mistaken. The engine is designed to reach and operate at temperatures close to 200°.

The chunks are in the filter luckily. Visible to my naked eye after my 900 mile initial oil change. Of course “chunks” is a relative term. Visible to the human eye is definitely a chunk to the engine:)

Some of the early Atkinson Hybrid Engines (built at Ford’s Chihuahua Engine Plant) had chunks of metal in the oil that were big enough to blow holes through the engine block & oil pan. Starting fires oops 😬

Recalled and fixes at the factory put in place. One hopes 😅

They have been doing hand written oil reports for more than 30 years.

When was A.I. available for everyday use?

Obviously not 30 years ago.
Just sayin........
