The Maverick fuel pump is in a sump in the lowest part of the tank.
1 gallon (guess) should be sufficient to keep it submerged. Granted I ran mine empty (or did I? Maybe not?) but it's winter. Maybe I didn't run it "empty"? Maybe some sensor triggered when I hit some low limit? It was a controlled stop, no different than any other transition to EV mode.
No shudder / stutter like I was expecting.

Maybe it "shut off" rather than harm itself by actually running dry???
Also I noted no air in the lines or anything upon restarting. Was smooth as ever.
Speculation.
I realize you no longer can reply.
Thank You very much for that information. Maverick Hybrid gas tank is close to 16 gallons.
Pretty hard to refute photographic proof

This was quite the good read. Thanks. Back in the day when gas stations had buried metal tanks we always were checking them for water and rust flakes. I believe all the new tanks are non metallic.

I kinda doubt that there's much floating on top of the gas in your tank unless maybe you got some sawdust in there. In my area, E10 seems to average 6.15 lbs/gal (IFF the pumps are accurate!?) and water is 8.33. Dirt and such is even denser. Fuel pumps always have a polymer "sock" on the inlet to filter out the big stuff. IMHO, running the tank low will slosh all the bottom dirt into suspension a bit more and suck it into the sock repeatedly so that could result in just a bit more of it making its way into the fuel filter. I think the main issue is care and feeding of the fuel pump. The one in my '87 Mustang pumped the gas thru the motor to lubricate and cool it internally, so immersion was not required. However, running dry could easily damage it from lack of lubrication more than overheating so I would always avoid that.
Opinions on the details may vary widely, but the smart money would never run the vehicle out of gas until it dies.

I've read posts of people adding 17.5 gallons to an EcoBoost. At least one person added 18.0 gallons.
I wouldn't buy gas at this station. They are ripping you off by charging you for 18 gals, and giving you 17!

That's really rare. Pump's are usually pretty good. Sure, they are calibrated only once per year in most states, but if there was frequent, flagrant mis-dispensing word would get out quickly.

So, if by design, the tank is significantly larger, why state the "official" capacity as 13.8 gal? Why not round it up to 14?

The pump is in the center of the tank
The reason for the reserve is if you were to drive on a steep incline the fuel will slosh to the back of the tank.
They have tested it to about 45° & that's how much fuel it needs to keep the pump submerged, less than that & it runs out of gas.
Pretty common problem with F150's below 1/4 with their long narrow tanks

13.8 (Hybrid) and 16.5 (EB) are what you can expect to actually use reliably. Even on hills like Quest stated above.

I use all 13.8. Even 14.5 gallons some weeks. You don't mentally have to keep a "reserve." It's built in to some degree.

The reason for the reserve
Bah.

What a wimpy way to handle a reserve!

At least into the 70s, VWs had an "R" instead of an "E" at the end of the fuel gauge. This is because through 1963, they didn't have a gauge, but a reserve.

Integral to the tank.

If you look at the old tanks, there was a pinch from front to back near the end. Once your engine sputtered, you reached down to turn a know by your left foot, and it let the last gallon flow!

Even my '74 super beetle, with an 11 gallon tank, had this pinch, even though it was never used in a vehicle which segregated the reserve.

Next folks will want automatic chokes and spark advance!

odd bit of trivia: closer to the maverick tank explanation, Cadillac Northstar engines call for7.5 quarts of oil. Not because they use that much, but as a reserve to keep the whole five quarts that they do use available while banking!

low oil warning doesn't come on until something less than 5qts.

On my '25 XL Hybrid the Distance to Empty is using more than 13.8 gallons.

1st 2 fill-ups were 14.2 and 14.8 gallons with ~50 miles to empty. Last was 16.4 gallons with 13 miles to empty. All at different gas stations.

Just a heads-up to anyone counting on a lot of reserve after 0.

That's very interesting.
There's not much data from 2025's.
But 2022's to 2024's were pretty consistent.

Here's my 2022 TODAY.
I went 20 miles PAST zero showing.
