A little background: Always a car guy and love stick shifts. Currently have three small stick shift cars and my wife has her auto Jeep.

Dad recently passed away who was awesome working on cars and now a few things have changed
1. He won’t be here to bail me out if I can’t get my wife’s car fixed quickly. This makes me consider getting rid of my daily GR Corolla in favor of an automatic so she can drive it if needed.
2. I’m going to need to clean out his large garage, my mom will probably be moving soon as well as my grandmother - would be nice to have a bed and ability to tow a trailer. Also nice for my kayak and want to get a bike again in the future.

My current daily is the GR Corolla which is really small but does have a hatch I can put a few bags or stroller or dog into. My main concern with switching is am I going to miss having a secure/dry trunk. With a cover on the bed can you keep things nice in there? Is there a way to lock the bed? Anybody else made this transition and have input?

thanks!

Sorry for your loss.

Here's my experience after a few months, I've never owned a truck before

Got a hard roll-up cover, it keeps whatever's in the bed secure and it's reasonably watertight. If you get a big storm SOME water will get into the bed, in my case maybe half a cup or so. I got a few huge plastic totes where I put anything that needs to stay totally dry.

I absolutely love it, I've often told friends "I really shouldn't love having a pickup this much" 😄

PS: I always loved smaller, nimble, efficient cars, I think that's why I like the Maverick a lot. If I had an F-150 I probably wouldn't like it this much

FWIW you can still store some of those things under your rear bench seat.
I had an Escape before and loved my trunk/hatch area. Filled it with clothes and fire starter, blankets, jumper cables, scissors, TP, Games and all sorts of junk.
I don't miss it.

I'm a car/SUV guy too, and this is my first pickup. The storage in the cabin and bed with a hard tonneau in the Mav is incredible, and it's very easy to manage/secure the load. Now in many cases I wonder how I got by without the bed.

I was in the same boat as you and I do not miss the trunk. With the tonneau cover the bed is like a really large trunk. Main difference is if you fold up the tonneau cover you can carry a lot more larger things that you would not be able to in a trunk.

Get A Maverick with the towing package, and make sure trailor hitch comes with it.i would think it would!get a cover for the bed,a good one .area behind back seat does have alot of room but look yourself and see what you think.motor is up to you but i prefer the ecoboost.hybrid doesnt do anything for me but i,m also 74.i also have a bunch of youngsters, grandchildren and they use my truck more than i do because they can get anything in it.including car seats.i would say go for it.

I agree with all the thoughts above.

My take is if you need a drier storage (as noted above, I also use storage totes for dry storage).

We have the Ford hard tonneau cover as we ordered with the truck. Almost dry, but not 100%, a bit can get in in the drive through truck wash.

Ergo, the totes for perfectly dry storage on top of the back seat/underneath the seat storage.

I still carry all my safety stuff with me.

One of the main things that made me buy a Maverick was that the first one I saw had a tonneau cover on it, and I realized that made it like a car with a big trunk. I'm a car guy, too--my Maverick is my first truck.
I got mine with the factory hard trifold cover. It latches, and I figure it's as secure as a trunk (you can easily open a trunk with a crowbar if you want to). I was concerned about water intrusion, but even with Florida thunderstorms, very little water (like a teaspoon or two) gets in. I keep a big plastic tote in mine, so if I absolutely don't want water on something, I put it in there.

The biggest reason I didn't keep my 2020 Fusion was the trunk....it's ridiculously small on the PHEV/Energi model. Now I have WAY! more storage and usable space. I initially started with a cheap roll-up soft cover to give me time to find the best option. I wound up with the Leer HF650M plus the Elevate TS rails. With 5 hard panels and 4 folds it opens up to allow most of the bed and doesn't cover the 3rd brake light. 2 hand-knobs and it can be removed.

I traded my Corolla Hatch for the Maverick. The hatch was wonderful for carrying everything but my trike.

If you sell your GR Hatch - I bet you will enjoy the added carrying capability. Of course, you will miss your 300hp turbo & manual transmission!

You will notice that you sit higher up but still have the good visibility of your GR. I would suggest you get the Lobo model for the suspension upgrades & paddle shifters to help in your transition from the GR:)

Just remember things in the warmer months will get pretty toasty in the bed and pretty cold in the winter months if driving long distances -

I came from the 2008-2012 Escape (first vehicle I had and drove for 13yrs) then came to the Maverick (my first new vehicle). Having the room in the back of the Escape was nice and easy to get to if it was raining out. Found out I miss that just 1% vs having the Maverick. We were on a road trip up north and it was raining out and we needed to get something out of the back. In the Escape it would have been either myself climbing into the back, or someone in the back seat go back and get what was needed. In the Maverick, have to deal with the elements to get at it. So that is a small negative vs my old SUV.

about the tonneau cover.... I have the Ford Hard Trifold and I too was slightly worried about water intrusion as they are not (to my understanding) advertised as water tight or leak proof or anything like that. So there is reasonable chance that water will get in. I too bought a tote like others have said on here for in case there are legit things that I cant let get wet and cant fit inside the back for any reason. (hauling people or pets or something like that in the back seat). But my experience with water coming in has not been a lot like others have posted on here too.

For me the water that came in was more than others have said (a cup, teaspoons...etc), but not bad. Although the picture is kind of crap, this is after a car wash. the front corners and near the tailgate are the main areas water came in. Sure I can add more sealing tape and things like that, but the photo shows how much and where some water did come from. The added benefit to the grooved flooring is on the left side you can see the water will follow the channel and it would have potentially made its way out the back of the tailgate if it kept going. There have been a couple strong storms I drove through that the first thing I did when I pulled into the garage was pop open the tailgate to see how much water got in, and the result was similar to the photo...i just forgot to take photos of the couple other times*

hope this helps and ask away if you have more questions!

Thanks for all the replies! Sounds like my fear is unfounded which is great.

Now do I get XLT with luxury package or Lariat. Really don’t want to pay the Lariat price but like adaptive cruise, easier to clean seats, and spray in bed liner. Might just see what I can get the best deal on.

Lobo if you want an Ecoboost. Lariat for the Hybrid. My 2 cents.
(I know - Lobo was not on your list)
