I did a bed rug with the hard rollup tonneau cover, and it has been working out great! It does get very hot in the summer sun so when we are on a road trip we put the bag with the medicine in it in the cab. The hard rollup and the locking tailgate makes it very secure and we dont have to worry about our valuables at a rest stop.
The front rail of the box is lower than the side rails, so making it water tight is not going to happen, but I have been pleased with how little water has gotten in during a hard rain. There is a trickle in each corner but it just drains out and is not absorbed by the bed rug.
We did get the XLT with the luxury package, I wanted the Lariat for the adaptive cruise, but we wanted the cloth seats and just couldn't justify the additional expense for that one option. Look at both and choose which is best for you, you cant go wrong either way! Be sure you get the 4K tow package, it includes beefier engine cooling which is beneficial even if you never tow anything.

All of the above... and back seat bottom flips up for expanded capacity. Advantage over putting stuff on the seat is skipping the seat belt warnings.

I have a mantra which is : the features you skimped on will bug you long after you've forgotten the price difference 😄

We got the Lariat and have zero regrets. You have a GR Corolla which isn't really a "value" purchase, it's more of a "spoil myself" car so you'll probably enjoy the Lariat perks

I'd have a tough time giving up that GR 😭

but in terms of missing what I assume is a pretty small trunk I think you'll be fine.

Thanks for all the replies! Sounds like my fear is unfounded which is great.

Now do I get XLT with luxury package or Lariat. Really don’t want to pay the Lariat price but like adaptive cruise, easier to clean seats, and spray in bed liner. Might just see what I can get the best deal on.
I have a 24 XLT hybrid, no Luxury, and I am perfectly happy with that -- except for the lack of adaptive cruise. Really wish it had it, but wasn't nearly worth the $$. (Push button start would be nice to but that's a much smaller deal to me, and has some security downsides to boot.)
I did add the sunroof and like that a lot (but I live in San Diego so ...)

You did ask if the tailgate locks. It does on my Lariat and I'm sure it also did with my XLT. Don't know if the central locking includes the XL, but I'd be surprised if it didn't.
I have the Leer cap and when it is locked, it is nice and secure. The lights coordinate with the truck which is nice.

FWIW you can still store some of those things under your rear bench seat.
I had an Escape before and loved my trunk/hatch area. Filled it with clothes and fire starter, blankets, jumper cables, scissors, TP, Games and all sorts of junk.
I don't miss it.
X2 the storage under the rear bench seat is Nice for Gallon Jugs of Water or 12 packs of Water and Sweet Tea.

I have a hardtop bed cover. The bed is my trunk. Just lock the tailgate and you have moderate protection of the stuff hidden in there.

I also have a bonus trunk: I did a rear-seat-delete and put in a large plywood platform in it's place (lift out panels for the underseat storage cubbies)

my 24 XL does not have electronic tailgate locking. You have to use a "key", like some sort of caveman.

I thought we all had to use a key for the tailgate - my 25 Lobo needs the key.

I enjoyed those old Geico Caveman ads back when I watched TV.

Nope, no key needed to unlock the tailgate of my 23 XLT with the lux package. It unlocks with the fob or my OEM keypad.
I have the base Lobo, but I’ll try my fob next time I back there. Thanks for the tip! I don’t need no stinking owners Manual when I have forum bros:)

Coming from a large Italian family, all of my relatives who are in the "Construction" and "Shipping" businesses back East......wink wink....I was concerned where they would put the bodies if one of them ever got a Maverick. So far...I think I'm the only one. :lipssealed::lipssealed::lipssealed:
