A little background: Always a car guy and love stick shifts. Currently have three small stick shift cars and my wife has her auto Jeep.

Dad recently passed away who was awesome working on cars and now a few things have changed
1. He won’t be here to bail me out if I can’t get my wife’s car fixed quickly. This makes me consider getting rid of my daily GR Corolla in favor of an automatic so she can drive it if needed.
2. I’m going to need to clean out his large garage, my mom will probably be moving soon as well as my grandmother - would be nice to have a bed and ability to tow a trailer. Also nice for my kayak and want to get a bike again in the future.

My current daily is the GR Corolla which is really small but does have a hatch I can put a few bags or stroller or dog into. My main concern with switching is am I going to miss having a secure/dry trunk. With a cover on the bed can you keep things nice in there? Is there a way to lock the bed? Anybody else made this transition and have input?

thanks!

pluses and minuses for everything,
- more room in the bed than most trunks but some SUV’s have a lot of room too. The bed allows for better vertical height.
- the bed is higher /harder to lift stuff too than access to any trunk, and gate is heavier ( all of this is less of an issue on Maverick than larger truck) . You can get aftermarket gate dampers to help w gate. My Lariat has 19” tires, not sure if xl/xlt w 17” tires is lower access or if makes any noticeable dif, Lobo might be lower?
- I have soft cover and while it locks by gate locking it could be cut, but I have had convertibles and Jeep soft tops and so far so good- a folding or retractable hard cover is probably more secure if you have valuables, but I like my roll up.

I’ve always had hatchbacks or station wagons, notchback sedans are a waste of space!
A crew cab pickup is useful but lacking a secure area, a bed cover is good but a PITA (Has anyone made a remote power bed cover?)
You can put stuff on the back seat, but the dog owns that, if I put stuff in his space I get the ‘look’.
The Maverick is easy to live with but it’s not small, it would only just fit in my garage.

What you will miss is all the storage in the Mav if you ever sell it. If you go back to just a trunk you will not be able to do a lot of things you got used to. I have a hard tonneau cover and the tailgate locks so, although a few drops of water get in after a good rain there's no issues.

Coming from a Freestar, I miss the warm & dry cargo area . Unfortunately they don't make them any more. With the seats removed I could fit almost anything in it.
Mav's nice but if I had a choice to get a new Windstar, Freestar or Maverick Id take the minivan

I had a hatchback and DO miss the immense storage, BUT... the Maverick has LOTS of smaller places where you can stash stuff. I put bed cubbies in both sides, the back under-seat area holds a lot, the center console too, a Mabett tray under the driver seat, and so on. I don't often carry more than 2 so the back seat has a dog cover to protect it from a huge pile of shopping bags, and the floor behind the driver has a pile of crapola too. So yes, if you're a packrat, you may miss having a trunk. However, my hatchback could not carry a full size refrigerator, a full sheet of drywall or plywood, or a cubic yard of mulch. So there are tradeoffs. I love my Mav, and the 45 MPG it gives me.
