In 2004, General Motors had to put out a recall on three-and-a-half million trucks after over 100 drivers suffered minor accidents due to collapsed tailgates.

when was the last time you found a perfectly flat 4x8 sheet or long plank wood at Home Depot or similar? They all seem to come pre-bent for us now. Level tailgate is a moot point here...

I was thinking more along the lines of a long piece of furniture. More fragile than a sheet of plywood.

Look, I love my maverick and can forgive/understand the compromises that go into making a truck that starts at $20k. But this isn't that. This is clearly just someone fucking up a measurement.

I didn't receive my Maverick yet however my experience with other vehicles with tailgates is that there is usually an adjustment on the latch assembly and in conjunction with the striker bolt that attaches to the side of the bed quarter it may be possible to move that bolt forward to pull the cable and then adjust the latch back so the tail gate closes with out being to tight. I do not know if the latch and striker bolt it's adjustable on this vehicle. Does your tail gate body lines fit properly now when it is closed. ??

Your reaching. Lol. Im sure you could find lots of problems with a tape measure and level. On my my 08 f150 the cab and bed were installed 3/8 inch to 1 side. You couldnt tell looking at it but the tape measure doesnt lie. The maverick is probably closer due to uni-body but frame off trucks are all way off.

You're supposed to use the 3\4 tailgate position for your long, flat loads

I 100% agree...if I'm carrying a 4x8 flat load. Doesn't help me if I'm carrying anything narrower, say a 2x8 flat load.

The tailgate closes and aligns just fine. And you can't adjust the cable mount points - they're welded on. The problem is the length of the cable. It's like an inch too long.

Please review post #260 (not mine) for a reality check. Have you guys also measured fit and finish on hood alignment, gaps on all 4 doors too? I actually did that on my 1st ever brand-new vehicle purchase in 1987- a Ford Ranger.

Dealer lots were overflowing with dozens of units in each color back in those days. I was fixated on what was a close resemblance to today's hot pepper Red. I believe there were 16 in stock and I spent a whole afternoon with ruler, pad, and pencil examining every 1. None were perfect! In the end I settled for the most aligned 1 truck I could find and figured I could adjust some of the door and hood gaps at home myself. In those days JD powers, Consumer Reports, etc. Published initial quality rankings including fit and finish with American manufacturers always bringing up the rear.

Our stamping and other processes have improved massively since then, and I can't remember even seeing that category even ranked anymore because of industry wide parity. The moral of my story is I had to learn to live with less than perfect on some aspects of my vehicles and ignore it. My Maverick has been a joy so far and the overall value and use case was spot on to my expectations, so no complaints or imperfections change the big picture here.

Look, I love my maverick and can forgive/understand the compromises that go into making a truck that starts at $20k. But this isn't that. This is clearly just someone fucking up a measurement.

I determined before buying a Maverick wouldn't possibly meet every use case I might encounter and workarounds would be required. I share an F-150, 6' bed with my wife and purchased a 6x10 box utility trailer to mitigate limitations of Maverick short bed length. Furniture, motorcycles, bales of hay, etc. end up in the other options instead of the Maverick.
