They said that their policy required that 4WD vehicles could not have different tires on the front and rear. All four had to be the same. I looked at them like they were from Mars.
So the problem actually came down to the mounting the tires?
I bought 1 tire for a friend who was not a Costco member. Costco had no problem putting it on the rim.🤷‍♂️

Edit: it was 1 tire not 2.

Correct. However, once they declined to mount just two tires, they then refused to sell me two tires to go, because "they knew the plan I had for the tires and would therefore be "liable".

Why would you drive several thousand miles on a mismatched tire and rim? I know for a fact in North America there are tire stores at least every 500 miles apart 😉. It's your truck and you can do as you please. My Lariat spare is close in diameter also but not exact. If I had 30,000 miles on the set on the ground and 1 could not be repaired I would at a minimum replace 2 until I could get the other 2 replaced as I had to do in the past.
2022 hybrids came with a full size spare. My XLT spare came from the factory mounted i
on an XL silver steelie, the tire is slightly smaller in diameter being 215/60-17 with my stock tires being 225/65-17.

As my original post stated the last flat I had was many many years ago. Drove few miles to a tire store and replaced 2 tires. A spare tire is NOT meant as a replacement tire for your vehicle. Since I started driving in 1975 I have NEVER needed to drive more than 50 miles to get a tire repaired. Location matters. Unless you invest in a matching wheel and tire to the four on the ground ALL spares are temporary usage only. Thanks for the advise.
I upgraded and now have a true matching full size spare. Good for about 50 miles. When am on vacation I can over 200 miles from a tire shop. Even they may not have my size or a tire I want.

If your true, matching full size spare is only good for 50 miles then your 200 miles to tire shop leaves you SOL. Did you mean 50k miles? And yes different use requires different prep. I won't ever be 200 miles from a tire store.

Yep, my 2023 came with the same size tire.
I refer to it as a full service spare. Full load rating, full speed, rating and full treadware.
Our spare tires come with a H speed rating and treadwear mark of 440.
Because of the size difference. I would not do 80 miles an hour with this spare on my truck.

A treadwear rating of 440 means a tire is expected to last 4.4 times longer than a baseline reference tire graded at 100 during a controlled government test. As a general rule of thumb noted by Reddit users, you can add two zeros to estimate potential mileage, meaning a 440 rating roughly points to around 44,000 miles of expected wear under ideal conditions.

Different tire diameter on all wheel or four wheel drive does throw that axle drive out of sync. It's very slight depending on the size difference, but avoid jackrabbit starts.

No it didn't. They called it a "full size" spare, but they never were the same size as the other 4.

Read my post again! I said the spare tire was smaller and gave its size along with stock tire size. Yes Ford advertised it as full size which by legal definition is true, but misleading. I installed new tires today and used the one tire that had considerably less wear do it being replaced 20k ago due to sidewall damage. The spare's wheel is a stock 2022 steelie on XL models. I now have a true full size spare.
