I purchased the full-size spare, and I was curious everyone’s opinions on buying a cover for it. The thought of having a rusty old spare underneath my first brand new vehicle is not appealing.

Is it even feasible to fit a cover underneath (clearance, working with the clamp, ect.)?

Is it worth it economically?

Would any cover be able to handle an Ohio winter?

I’m leaning towards trying out a better quality but still relatively inexpensive cover.

No cover would be economically feasible. Whatever humidity or water slush etc would be held in longer by any cover that was not hermetically sealed. If you want to keep spare pristine, clean it and paint any rust spots and seal tire also at least annually. The stock spare rim is not particularly pretty anyway.

Excellent points. I didn’t think about a cover doing more harm than good by retaining the nastiness.

I guess I’ll opt for a semi-regular preventative maintenance routine.

Someone on here a long while back used a cheap tire cover and just cut an moderately sized X in the middle so it would get a little bit of airflow and drain. Not sure if I'm going to do that though

I’d go through a touchless car wash with an underbody spray once a week during the winter to wash the salt off. Should be good beyond that

I am going to replacen my spare with the same wheel and tire and put it through my normal tire rotations.

I can see a lot of benefits after the upfront cost. Would be great preventitive maintenance since you could clean at that time and also check and grease mechansim that hold the spare.

I had the same thoughts about not wanting the spare to be a corroded mess.

Just switched from the continentals to bridgestone weatherpeaks and thought about that after the switch.
