Oil filter is straight down access. To prevent getting oil all over when removing it; after loosening it, put a disposable plastic cup over it to remove it as you finish unscrewing it. The cup will catch most of the oil that will drain out.

I just had my local shop do my hybrid this morning. I supplied the oil (Valvoline) and filter (Motorcraft) and they charged me $25 for the labor and disposal; I thought that was quite reasonable. I always like to give new vehicles an oil change at around 1k miles.

Use a cup to grip and turn the oil filter to remove it. Zero mess. If you don't have a cup, go to dollar tree and spend the money. You'll thank yourself.
This is the way to do it 😎

Works every time!

Put a ziplock bag over the filter when removing to prevent drips, then any dirty paper towels go in the bag before closing.

I've been using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Full Synthetic. Picked up 5qt jug for $26 on sale at Walmart this morning. Kind of crazy the 1qt container was $9. Like others I have a battery screwdriver for the torx screws for the shield. I also use a torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to 20 ft/lb. Prefill and hand tighten FL-910S filter and done. Just hit 40K miles and change every 5k miles.

If it is your first oil change the oil filter may be really tight. I bought this oil filter remover (oil filter wrench) from Amazon. It worked great.

That looks much better than what I originally got.

Had that stuck filter, from videos I knew screwdriver thru it with super minimal turning arc, was just going to slice thru the metal and not work.
Walmart down street had the exact size wrench.
Despite cheap - couldn't warrant a 1 use tool purchase.
Got the rubber gripper version, which worked - but still annoying with minimal arc room.
But at least I got a tool I can use on others.
As I've discovered - Ford factory isn't the only one going overboard on over-torquing filters.
Glad I had it for other folks too.

But that tool looks much better.

Thanks all! I've been doing oil changes since the 70's (hence why I prefer not to roll under and up too many times) and I've accumulated many oil filter wrenches. Anyone know what size fits this filter? If not I'll get one like suggested.

Back goes in first to grab that raised area on shield with tab sticking out off-center.

Then slight bend to get 2 front tabs in - holds itself up.
Ya - clean it off first!

Tech doing the CV axle, just held shield in place - and didn't do front tabs - just squished the front bumps, and stripped the screws attempting to flatten them.

Hope the tech did better on the axle related nuts & bolts. Not reassuring.

Thank you for the marked up photo and re-installation tips regarding tabs holding it up. I am wondering how many times it will fall in my face during my first go around, but at least I will be prepared and have this reference.

You can slide it under first.
Then get down next to it, and one arm under it was enough to lift and get that back tab in.
Then both hands to get the front edge for slight bend to get those tabs in.
Then I do the side front screws to stop the droop effect.

Same on removal with chance of that mess falling off in face - you'll notice that's all there because it's not in face.
Back screws first, sides, front.
By then I'm not under it anymore - though face is on the worst side I guess beside it.
Those holes in middle allow 1 hand to pull down to cause enough droop for front tabs to let go - but other hand is holding up there. Very slight pull forward of whole thing releases back tab.
Gentle lowering to the ground.
As long as no dogs or cats choosing that moment to do zoomies or fight right in that space - should be safe. I can almost picture that video.

I guess the one I initially got did 2 sizes, but still limited compared to strap.

Strap requires a bit of finangeling to get it tight before twisting, in small spaces.
Why it's nice to hear the 3-prong one could get factory tight filter off.
