What I don't understand is how this problem can happen. Ford has been manufacturing hybrids for 15-ish years and used a 2.5L Atkinson cycle engine etc. the entire time.

[Mine: 2024 hybrid, 1,400 miles - I just haven't figured out how to change the photo from my 22 EB.]

base problem is a very small (estimated at 500 or less) improperly polished crankshafts - the problem is that they don't know which Mavs got them installed so it's a crapshoot as to if you have one or not. Earlier there was suggestion that they'd recall all of them and do some oil analysis that MIGHT show that you have one of them.

Seems to me that the easy fix would be to simply extend the warranty... The LAST think I would want is a new engine installed by my local dealership.
My sentiment exactly. I didn't really want an engine replaced at the dealership.
But I had no choice. My engine failed at 7800 miles, and it was catastrophic failure pistons slapping valves, other ensuing damage. They said mine was due to a bolt coming loose from a phaser, but I don't know for sure.

I wish mine had caught fire. A total loss sounds good about now, no faith in the Ford product now.

It's a very small issue, last I saw, only about 300 engines out of 135,000 were actually defective. Things happen, Ford just wants to examine everyone's mavericks to be safe.

Got my letter yesterday also.
Sounds like you know some facts about the cause of issue....and not some wild guess. Wild guesses do none of us any good. As a software developer, I can easily see a diagnostic error turn off an engine or fuel pump to stop a fire.

I got my first recall letter on this issue back in Sept and dealer keeps telling me parts are not available...but from your comment it may not be a need for parts, but more testing of oil analysis.

As a precaution I have two gas fire-extinguishers and know if I see a fire, do not raise the hood but release spray through the grill or crack in the hood.

Not worth posting but my Ford dealer service rep told me that Ford only knows of 4 or 5 fires out of the thousands of Hybrids they have in service.

Ford is amazing. They can fix errors in engine assembly with software!
Kia/Hyundai did! I think the Check Engine light blinks when a launched rod is detected by the knock sensor.

But seriously, I have a feeling the software component of this recall will be designed to disable the hybrid powertrain if the ICE unexpectedly stops.
I hope I'm wrong because my favorite Hybrid feature is being able to creep off the road if for some reason you run out of fuel.

I am so glad they played me for a chump making me wait 1 year and 3 1/2 months for my truck pushing it to a 2024 model.
So far no recalls, just missed the turn signal thing.

Double whammy on this redundant letter, as it’s a reminder/update of a Ford letter previously received.

This recall letter covers both our ‘21 Escape and the’22 Maverick. Not worried about either, just ‘aware’.

I will, mostly for entertainment purposes, ask the Mobile Unit technician on Thursday, scheduled to come to the house to clear 2 software recalls on both vehicles, “any chance you can take care of this recall too?”.

Perhaps a cheap shot, but if it’s asked with a grin, should provide a peek into Ford Recall Land!

On to the day!

I find it interesting that the nature of the fix hasn't been fully disclosed after all this time. They know what it is. My journalist gut suspects they must be withholding it for a reason, perhaps PR narrative control if it's something that seems ridiculous which would inflame consumers or if it's a large expense replacing engines which would affect news on the profitability side with investors.
