At this point I can provide anecdata...

I have been driving for 30+ years and was never rear-ended prior to owning a Maverick. In the last two years I have been rear-ended 3 times. First time left no perceptable damage, but the second totaled it. I got a new Mav and have had it just shy of a year and was rear-ended again. Still waiting for insurance adjuster to let me know if it will be totaled. That little frame piece under the bed is significantly bent, so I am guessing they will total it.

Now I have to decide if I love the Maverick enough to get a third or just give up.

Your accident history up to now indicates that a combo of you & your Hybrid Maverick are statistically prone to get rear ended. Bad luck possible but less likely.

Do you have a theory? Have you been stationary with brake lights on? What colors have your 3 Mavs been? All hybrids?

Almost everyone claims “it was the other guys fault” when describing their accidents. With you getting rear ended - it truly is the other guys fault.

Not a Maverick, but my wife's Fusion was rearended 3 times, all stopped in traffic. When she got her Escape hybrid, she was the lead vehicle in a 5 car chain reaction in the first month she had it. Sh!t happens. More traffic, worse drivers, everyone speeds, phones, etc.

I don't know if anybody else has tried this but I can stop from 60-0 in 3.02s in my 2022 FX4 on the stock Pirelli Scorpion ATRs with 20k miles on them.

60-0 in 2.8 to 3.2 seconds seems to be the average spec for our Mavericks. But that does not include reaction time - which could add multiple seconds.

More anecdotal data. In 24 years of driving I've been rear ended once (in 2008), and the Maverick didn't exist even in concept then. I've had my Maverick almost four years, never been rear ended in it.

Have you changed something about the way you drive since getting the Maverick? Maybe that is something to consider. Or maybes, as many of us have observed, people are just becoming worse drivers since 2020? People are more distracted while driving. I for one cannot count how many times I see people behind me messing with a smartphone while driving.

My wife used to work at the HQ for a OTR trucking company called Yellow Freight. The story was that their fleet (and logo) were painted variations of yellow and orange color over the years specificily to reduce accidents while hauling freight across the country. The company claimed that there were studies that showed those colors were the best visually noticed by a majority of drivers overall.

My dad had a fleet of Ford Econoline vans. For a few years my dad ordered them in light lime, light banana, and white. The vans with these three color choices had reduced insurance rates.

The only time I was rear-ended was in my Maverick. The teenage kid totaled his little Chevy Spark in “stop-and-go” traffic. While waiting for police, he continued playing a video game on his phone… hmmmm?!

Yep imagine that, nowadays they gotta constantly text, play games and watch videos instead of keeping their eyes on the road and being aware of their surroundings. Hard to put all the blame on them, they’ve been given some type of screen to keep them occupied practically since birth so their parents could be uninvolved and doing their own screen time. So they’re doing what they’ve observed. Just nuts and insanity is my 2 cents on the matter

Karl Marx had said that "religion is the opium of the people." Now it's screens....

Couple weeks ago I was going through Atlanta. Speed limit posted 65 (if I remember correctly) traffic bumper to bumper 80-85. About 3 slow downs one of which was to 0 for about 10-12 minutes. Had about 11k miles on Continental true contact Tour 54. They worked great!!!! Did not think of timing the stop.

My experience on the roads is thst I have never seen as much distracted driving as we have now.

I have seen people playing games with their phone propped up on their steering wheel while driving. I see drivers, both civilian and supposedly professional truck drivers behind the wheel with their head down on the highway, glancing up every 10 or 15 seconds at highway speed.

I look around at stoplight and at least 25% of other drivers have their head tilted down while they are smiling at their belly button...

That is why I upgraded my brake lights to way brighter LED bulbs and put a flashing then steady LED 3rd brake light in my Maverick.

I also try to ease up to a stop light and slowly and gently pump the brakes to try and make sure the drivers behind me know we are stopping, without stopping quickly, if at all possible.

Having said that, I dread it when Friday afternoons roll around and I have to go into the city. Everybody seems to be driving angry.

Defensive driving habits help, but not if someone else plows into your backend at a light.

Drive safe out there,

Andy
