Well, I rolled a new 2025 XL off the lot on Monday and 24 hours later while stuck in traffic a big old stress crack pops across the windshield from the bottom.

I roll into the service bay this morning and the tech looks at the windshield for about half a second and tells me I caught a rock, and he can tell because of a flakes along the crack. To me, flakes along a crack on the top surface are a clear marker of low quality glass. In any case, they're putting their foot down and telling me Ford Canada absolutely won't cover it because it failed a "pen test."

So now I've gotta get my insurance involved on a policy that's less than a day old. It sucks being at the corner of a weird triangle between me and the dealership's service and sales department.

To top it off, the glass is backordered and has no ETA. Anyway, hope everyone else's day is going better than mine.

🙁 Sadly. Our first windshield crack of 25.
Good luck with the Dealer.

A friend of mine had a similar issue about a month ago with his Lexus. Brand new, no impact - the glass just cracked. He was able to have it replaced by the dealership as a part of new car warranty.

Would those wind / bug deflectors help if this was actually a rock (which I highly doubt it was). I was debating on getting one based on how many people have issues with the maverick glass but I don't know if it would actually help.

It might be coincidence but I had 2 chips in the first two months of owning my Mav without a deflector and zero in the three years since having the deflector.

Yeah, it's a bummer for sure.

My sales rep is telling me it will get covered. To his credit, he's been awesome from the beginning. I think the hardest thing now is going to be waiting for the backorder to get cleared up.

That's a good tip on the deflector. I don't know if it will help either but I've never replaced the windshield glass in our Subaru that has one. My Ranger didn't and it's had new glass every two years that I've owned it.

I wonder why the mavs seem to be so prone to rock damage. I wouldn't think it would be much different than an Escape.

The angle of the windshield seems to play a role. Other makes with a more straight up and down windshield seem to have the same problem.
I also have a suspicion that the Mavericks windshields might be a little thin in order to save weight.

People on here have talked about the windshield being more upright than other vehicles. It is a strange phenomenon. The roads are definitely getting crappier so that could be a reason too.

I can't imagine one of those deflectors protecting against any kind of rock, unless the rock actually hit the deflector. The smallest rock has hundreds of times the mass of an insect.

Mavericks aren't more prone to rock damage than any other car.
Agreed. My XL has 21k on it and not chips or cracks.

OP: Just file with your insurance and take it to a real glass shop. Most policies are zero-deductible on glass. If yours isn't and you fear you'll have more windshield issues, change you deductible.
