Why are so many Mavericks getting rear ended?

I can't speak for the rear-ending/collisions, but I will say that as a Maverick driver, it seems I've had to do far more avoidance/defensive driving since becoming an owner, and have used the horn in my Maverick far more than any previous vehicle I've driven. Not sure if more people are just too focused on their cell phones, or I've just become more impatient, but there's definitely a dark force in the driving world out there that needs discussion.
It sounds like your driving is more attentive to protect your new vehicle, making you more aware of the dangers. Its also possible the maverick is giving you better vision than your previous vehicle, or features you didn't have before, such as blind spot detection, are alerting you to more danger.

The naysayers are not reading the details. Let me spell it out.

When HYBRIDS take foot off the "go" pedal (the right most pedal is not directly connected to anything with gas) WHILE the truck is in "L" for simulated low gear (there is no gear change) the truck slows from 30 mph to 3 mph in about 10 seconds. (I'll measure if anyone wants more precision).

30 to 3 mph is not coasting, it is braking, but no tail lamps are illuminated unless your foot is on the left pedal.

I gotta say, the CoPilot 360 is the SHIZZ!

I had a good line of vision in my Honda Accord, but I think the higher seating position in the Maverick gives me a better overall view, and I'm no longer driving a manual trans, which I miss sometimes but the Maverick is just so much better to drive.

Mav has same 2.5 MPH bumper impact rating as other Unibodies. Feds used to require 5 mph rating; if you Google "Bumper Shocks" you will see how it used to be done. The only other thought is the Mav has a two tier bumper, top tier is the step which sticks out but is very thin, then below that the face of bumper is actually set back a bit - perhaps allows impacts to get deeper into the truck and contact metal in less distance. Personally looking for a light up Ford Logo to go on the tailgate, would like to wire that to the brake lights...

It seems like a very high percentage of Mavericks are getting rear ended. Most of the accident posts here are about getting rear ended. I read an article recently about a huge salvage company somewhere in the Midwest that is buying up all the totaled Mavs and the majority have rear end damage. Certainly Idiots on cell phones and texting are a contributing factor but you would expect the rate to be the same as all vehicles. Idiots don t discriminate. So that can’t be the only reason
One thing I suspect with Hybrids is one pedal driving. Ford did not put a simple $25 part in the hybrids that would engage the brake lights when the vehicle is regen braking like most other hybrids and EV’s do. Maybe the NHTSA will pick up on this and order a recall.
Couple of questions for the group.
Of those that have been rear ended did to you replace the stock brake bulbs with brighter led’s like Lasfits?
If you are running the replacement LED’s do you think they make a difference?
Basicly, does anyone have any good ideas to prevent this?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Didn't know no brake light when one pedaling. Thx.
Did LED the third brake light but for some reason couldn't pry off the rear right cover.without possibly damaging the paint. Left side did but not the right side.

A few thoughts:
•With the exception of one vehicle accidents (like hitting a pole) and sideswipes, or head-on, ALL accidents involve a rear end collision.
•All if those also included a front end collision
•How many Mavericks had a front end collision? I’ve seen several pictures showing the front end destroyed.

Here’s the question;
So, IN FACT, are the majority of the Maverick accidents rear end, or does it seem like the ones you’ve heard about were rear enders?
I honestly have no idea.
Just askin’ 😀

2 points here,

Are they getting rear ended as they are moving or when they are stopped? Not having my Maverick yet, if you are stopped does the engine turn off, and therefor you do not need to keep your foot on the brake, ie no brake light? (Obviously on level ground)

Cadillac did a study when LED's were first coming out and because they light faster than incandescent bulbs they said it translated to 22ft additional braking distance at highway speeds.

I agree. It would be kind of like the brake light coming on while downshifting a manual tranny. Not a good idea at all.
I am 70 years old. I have been driving since I could reach the pedals. My dad smacked me if he even thought that I was going to use my left foot to apply the brakes.
Using the left foot leads to riding the brakes. Again another smack while learning.

When stopping I try to hit the 100% mark for the regen however when I am stopping the truck my main focus is stopping the truck.
As far as accidents go I was taught to leave enough space between you and the vehicle in front to allow you change lanes should there be a problem with the vehicle in front.
People ignore red lights and stop signs with impunity. If the vehicle ahead doesn’t start showing in advance that they are coming to a full stop it leads to emergency braking by the vehicle behind.
Right on red where you are supposed to stop has the same problem. You stop and make your turn and pray that the person behind will not run into me.
Accidents are caused aggressive driving and inattentiveness.

People get blinded by how awesome they look and freeze, fail to hit the break, and ultimately destroy what they fell in love with in the same moment. Pure tragedy.

I put LED in my high mount 3rd brake lamp only then filmed it with iPhone.

It comes on about 3 frame at 30 fps sooner than the incandescents. So there's 0.1 second difference for sure. Up to you if you think that matters (much).

That .1 second will hardly matter to a suspended license weed smoking drunk playing with their phone.

I've been in 7 minor accidents in the last 25 years. None my fault. All me getting rear ended while stopped at red lights and once stopped at a crosswalk with pedestrians in it. Two of the 7 were the vehicle behind me getting rear ended and pushed into me.

Three different vehicles, 2 Nissan Frontier trucks and a Focus. Three different colors.

I don't think it's a Maverick thing. Maybe it's me?

Taken from a law firm:

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, rear-end collisions are the most common type of accident in the USA. These accidents chalk up a whopping 29% of all accidents.

Tailgating is the most frequent cause of these accidents. People are in a rush to get somewhere, so they follow close behind. If the car ahead suddenly halts at a stoplight, there may not be ample time to react properly.

Other causes are inattention, distraction, and panic stops.

I was rear ended at a stop sign 6 days after taking ownership. Low speed impact that felt like a bump. $1500 in damage. Girl was texting.

I've got two proposals.

First is some self-congratulatory nonsense suggesting that Maverick owners are practical, level-headed, alert people who are less likely than average to be the cause of a collision, and more likely to dodge a threat thanks to our great reflexes. This would mean our trucks get hit in the back at the same rate as any other vehicle, and we see less front-end damage because... we don't hit stuff.

Second, I'll suggest self-selection. If your beloved truck gets rear-ended, that sucks! You want people to tell you that sucks, so you post about it. If you make a mistake and hit something with the front of your truck, you're probably not proud of it, and don't post about it.
