The Civic hybrid sedan, Toyota Rav 4, and Toyota Corolla Cross were also strong considerations for me.

I really liked the Civic and almost went with that one, but I was worried about the lack of ground clearance in the snow, and the lack of technical knowledge of that model by the Honda service staff at 2 different dealerships turned me off (they couldn't answer a simple question about the hybrid battery, such as does it have passive or active cooling).

The Toyota's I gave up on as no dealerships had stock, and they all told me to get on the wait list and I'd be lucky to get one before next year.

I came off a Jeep GC 4xE, prior to that was a Honda Ridgeline, before that a small Jeep Cherokee and a Ram 1500.

The Ram doesn't fit in my garage, neither would a Ranger or Colorado.

The small Cherokee has a horrid transmission, I couldn't get rid of it soon enough.

The Ridgeline is not a bad truck. It is based off the Pilot so it rides just like a mid sized SUV with a little too much body roll and nose plowing, but in SWPA the fuel economy is rather lack luster and the infotainment system sucks.

The Jeep GC 4xE isn't too bad. It was my 1st hybrid and with the type of driving I do I got fantastic milage by driving it in electric mode most of the time. But as with the small Cherokee the transmission's programing map can actually be rather dangerous in SWPA. It was only a lease so it went back. But it did make me realize that I still needed a truck now & then and that hybrids do work.

So to fit in my garage (72" max clearance) it was either the Santa Cruz or the Maverick. Researching on here & other sites I came to find the Hyundai/Kia engines are not terribly reliable, there is a link to a side by side test on this site where the Hyundai blew its engine @ 15k miles. The Maverick is using tried & tested 2.0EB or 2.5 Adkins cycle engine w/ VVT. Was a bit concerned about the eCVT tranny until watching some videos on here that showed how it works. It is not the belt & pully CVT you might get with a Honda or Nissan and has 1/3 the parts of a typical automatic tranny. That sold me on the Maverick. My employer also has employee pricing incentives that allowed me to lock in a price, but the dealer still gave me the Ford employee price when I picked it up, saved me an extra $1000.
After 3.5 months I haven't had any issues and am quite satisfied.

At the time, the Ranger. But I really didn't like the Euro look. If the current Ranger was an option at the time, I would likely have a Ranger.

Heh, realised I kinda sounded like I never wanted a truck... well I did... but the trucks I wanted went extinct. What trucks I wanted were Ford Courier, Datsun Li'l Hustler/Nissan hardbody, 1G Ranger, 1G Dakota, 1G/2G Taco, all with 4 cyls. I didn't want a project truck though and certain well kept examples of these are rare $$$ and you're gonna keep them garage queen clean and not use them as a truck. Anyway, due to a gap of 15 years in there being anything like that, the Maverick is the only vehicle filling that hole... and also fitting well with current DD requirements.

Though I had periods of maybe wanting a Ridgeline (C'mon Honda, fix it, just 3 more mpg) maybe wanting an Avalanche (C'mon Chevy, fix it, make the DoD work great and don't worry about ppl "noticing" ...) a SportTrak (C'mon Ford, fix it, better motor for economy plzkthx...) Seemed so many times that "Family driver + Truck" type vehicles were almost there but not quite.

Anyway, what really accelerated my pounce was the 4K and AWD on hybrid this year.

tbh, a used lariat lightning.

Before trump, you could find ones around 20-40k miles for around 40-45k (if you were willing to travel to the state that had it).

now those jumped past 55k.

not paying extra while my wages aren’t keeping up with inflation.
Maverick 2025 xlt lux package I got for 32k before ttt
My 2025 xlt price is 37k. However, did get awd, hybrid, bedliner and 4k towing

Basically, nothing.

Ridgeline was expensive, old, and bad on gas.

Ranger was old.

Colorado was old.

Tacoma was old, expensive, and laughably underpowered.

So I ordered a Maverick in July 2021.

Was an early adopter for hybrids, and then early adopter for EVs. Been in an EV for my local/regional commuter for a long time. But I found myself in an EV that didn't agree with me. Remote service centers and malfunctioning tech. So I knew I needed to get out of it. I was cross shopping the Ford Lightning. So much to like in the Lightning, but stuff I knew from my experiences in the past EVs that needed to be addressed like the OTA updates, heat pump, and improved range/efficiency, faster charging. Ford fixed some of that in the 2024/2025 years, but then the cost was way more than I wanted to spend. I was already taking a financial beating to get out of the EV I was driving and couldn't see myself taking that depreciation beating again.

For a short while the price on the used Lightnings were dropping down to where I thought that would be doable, but that seems to have stabilized and gone the other direction. So it became obvious to me that I wasn't going to be able to get a gently loved Lighting for anywhere near what I was willing to pay.

I already have a HD truck for the heavy lifting/towing work around the property so this really is mostly the commuter/grocery getter, and occasional smallish truck like things and the Lightning seemed like a good fit. So when that became obvious it wasn't going to work out I just did a mental inventory of what I wanted this vehicle to do and a smaller truck would do it, but I didn't want to eat the higher cost of running another truck. The Hybrid Maverick seemed economical enough to make it worth a look. It isn't as efficient at the Lightning on a MPGe basis, but it was 25-30k less money in a used Lightning vs a new Maverick. That is a lot of "gas money".

Ford has been talking up this new EV midsize truck and the new T3 next generation truck. That was supposed to be here this year, but was punted, and punted again now out to 2027-2028. I thought at the time I was making the decision to buy the Maverick that it would probably just be a short term deal for a few years and I would make the jump into the new truck. Well it looks like the details are trickling in on the new midsize and it does not sound like it is going to measure up to what I need and want with a 400v system and a small battery pack.

I am falling deeper in love with the Hybrid Maverick by the day now. We will see what Ford brings, but so far the announcements aren't convincing by any means.

In the "small" truck space nothing else currently competes which is rather surprising. A PHEV/EREV version of this truck would be desirable. Lots of competitors say they are bringing something to compete and so far nothing has materialized. The Santa Cruze would have been taken seriously if it had a hybrid option, but since it didn't I didn't give it a second look.

A very far back distant second would have been a Ioniq 5/6 in the used market with the nod going to the hatchback 5 most likely. Those cars still have some ICCU issues, range isn't great, and efficiency isn't great. Looks like the new cars have corrected a few issues, but I wasn't going to buy something new to watch half the value vanish in a year or two. So I decided to take a pass on that one. The versatility of the new small truck was more desirable than this option.

I am happy with the Maverick decision.

My wife and I lost our cars in hurricane Helene. BMW x3M and a Chevy volt. We got whatever we could find in stock that would fit in our garage and a full size truck wouldn’t fit.

No cross shopping .
I saw it as the perfect opportunity to dump my low mileage bland Frontier and buy the Maverick .
More than doubled my fuel mileage for no increase in cost ....

interesting how many folks didn't cross shop another pickup truck. so I'm guessing for some of you the Maverick may have been your first pickup truck... which is what Ford was aiming for with the Maverick.

I test drove a Ranger. However, disqualified it becuase my wife didn't want somthing so rugged. The Maverick was more like her CRV than my Frontier. We share the Maverick as our only vehicle, sans an electric street legal golf cart that we can putt around (no pun intended) in Green Valley for small errands. So it was important that my wife be as comfortable with it as I was.

Current vehicle 2003 Expedition still in great shape at 107k.
2001 Sportrac 184K, timing chain rattle due to no one told me to change the tensioners at 80K. Almost made it till the Mav delivery. Sold that to a mechanic who pulled the engine and replaced timing chains. Still running.

Looked at RAV4 Hybrid, prefer PHEV as I have solar. Wicked expensive, over 54K. Standard Hybrid still near $50k. Less room inside and egress is not as good as the Maverick. Rav4 mileage not as good as Maverick hybrid.

Coming from the Sportrac, Maverick was perfect.

Nothing, no other Hybrid in this category.

I was content with my 2005 Sport Trac until the Mav came out in 2022.

First "just mine" pickup, though I've regularly driven many in the past. Had an Escape I liked. Have owned BMW's and Hondas mostly.

Cross-shopped with Civic Hybrid Hatchback, Kia Niro, maybe some Mazda, Corolla Cross Hybrid.

I needed commuter and errand vehicle; I live in New Mexico so towing is desirable.

When you look at the above, it's scattered, and yeah: I just needed affordable transportation with a newly larger commute (mileage). The Civic is a great car, but I hate the super-angled hatch. Toyota dealership was just too irritating (doing me a favor letting me shop their cars). I loved the Niro, could still see having one as 2nd car in family.

Then a friend told me how much he loved his XL. I drove it. I really liked it. I like more 'stuff' though, so I went and bought a Lariat two days later.

More I drive it, the more I like it.
