a) my car is ready to pop over 100k miles and is showing it's age and b) I've been saying for years that if they made a truck the size of my old 1980 toyota pickup, except with a crew cab and AWD that I would buy it in a heartbeat and here we are.

I have a 2012 Chevy Colorado with 125,000 miles. I have had to put very little into it, but recently the fuel pump had to be replaced. Gas mileage was never great, but when even Quick Check/Wawa gas hits $3.50 a gallon, that got me interested in a hybrid. The $20,000 price is amazing in 2021. The only point holding me back from ordering is that I have a twelve and a half foot kayak. Finally decided that I can live with half of the boat hanging out since I use a zillion bungee cords and with the tailgate down it is not going to fall out. Ordered a Velocity Blue base hybrid and look forward to getting it in the late Spring or early Summer.

I wasn't looking but I was waiting. I've been waiting for a replacement for my '99 S-10. I knew that in twenty years there had to be a way to produce a solid small truck with great gas mileage at half the cost of a full sized truck. I prefer Chevy and still do. However I had to visit a Ford body shop to get a repair estimate because a neighbor accidentally hit my little Honda Fit. I happened to ask the salesman if I was obligated to buy if I ordered. You all know that answer. So I did. And then I did my research to see if the vehicle would suit my needs. It does. Now eager to get it.

I was going to buy a small used SUV to haul my wife’s wheelchair and travel with and a truck for doing stuff around the house. With the price of used vehicles I started investigating new. I have employee pricing on Fiat/Chrysler/Alpha Romeo, but none of the FCA fit the bill. Then I saw the Maverick which is essentially a small SUV with a bed. Two for the price of one as it were.

The lease on our 2019 Ranger is up in 8 months. I figured I'd better start looking a year ahead of time due to the chip shortage and supply chain issues. We were away up in the Buffalo, NY area in late August and I saw a prototype Maverick with Michigan manufacturer plates parked in front of our hotel. It was intriguing. At first, I wasn't so sure it would be for me as I was not initially crazy about the styling when I saw it. I kept the thought in the back of my mind though.

We decided no more leasing and that we'd own the next vehicle with the plan of keeping it 15 years until I approach retirement. To be honest, I have some fear and trepidation about owning an EcoBoost engine long term. The two we've leased have been fine but I worry about things like oil dilution and turbochargers needing replacement.

On top of all that, as much as I wanted a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton truck - I have ZERO need for one at the present time. I sat down and asked myself, why would I spend $50k-$60k+ for a truck when I have not towed a trailer in 3 years, have gone off road maybe once or twice (soft roading), and used 4x4 once in the Ranger? We've hauled stuff in the bed for the most part, most of which was fairly light weight. It just didn't make sense with the fuel prices and purchase costs to get a larger truck. My boys are 19, 16, & 13 - the oldest one drives his 2008 F-150, the middle will be driving in less than six months, and the sad reality is that the time where such a large vehicle is required is about to come to an end relatively soon.

I have driven a pickup my entire 27+ years of driving and I still plan on doing that, probably until I can no longer drive. I've become more and more loyal to Ford as well over the years. Then I started researching and learning about the Maverick from sites such as this and watching You Tube stuff, including Long MacArthur/Tim Bartz. The more I watched, the more I liked about the Maverick. Saw that dealers such as Granger and Chapman were offering very reasonable pricing too, very tempting.

I know I want a Maverick for the next vehicle but still have not placed an order for one. At first I was certain I needed AWD, FX4, & 4K Tow but felt I'd have to lease again if I wanted those options. I have never even driven a hybrid before, nevermind owning or leasing one. The warranty on the components is compelling and the upfront purchase price is less (maintenance too?), which is attractive. The fuel economy is a big positive (the 2.0 in my Escape was awful). I guess I am really torn still - do I buy one with AWD and EB engine and spring for an extended warranty from Flood/Ziegler or take a chance on a hybrid when the order banks open for the 2023 MY? Paralysis by analysis I guess. Just trying to get it right.

I have an appointment to have our Ranger appraised tomorrow at a local dealer, hoping to have some positive equity and sell the truck to get out of the lease early. Maybe they'll have a Maverick to test drive and I can get a good feel for it. To be continued...

I chose the maverick because I have always wanted a pickup but didn’t need the midsize to large pickups on the market. This fit the bill perfectly. However if I would have known it would take over 6 months to even be put into production I would have bought a Japanese SUV to accompany my Honda Accord. I need a second car.

It feels like those who ordered early are the ones getting screwed the most. Might be my last go with Ford if I don’t get my vehicle next month.

My honey made me do it!

For years, my hobby has been saving vehicles from the land of unwanted toys, and giving them a home away from the bone yard. My most recent 3:

1997 Ford Aspire
2001 Camry LE 2.2
2001 Camry XLE 3.0

I love them all, as I have all of my previous wrecks. With the money I have invested in these orphans,
I could have bought a new Mercedes. Loads of time working working on the ground too, which I can't do any more. I was ordered by the BOSS (not Bruce Springsteen) to get rid of all the needy units, and get a "real" vehicle, as she is tired of watching me walking all bent over and limping for days after a simple oil-echtomy. (oil change)

I drive new and used vehicles for several different local dealers most days, and I love it. When she made the very loud and lengthy suggestion that I cut the crap, I started shopping. Used car prices are really stupid, even with a "dealer discount". I thought about a new Kia Seltos for awhlie. Nice, but the mileage isn't wonderful. I sort of settled on a Kia Soul EX. Mileage good, I can get in it, well equipped for the money, great warranty. Nice vehicle, but kind of boring. Then one of my co-pilots mentioned the Maverick. I had one in the seventies, so I looked it up out of curiosity.

The rest is soon to be History...I hope!

I honestly would not mind the wait, if everyone had to wait. But people who ordered way after me are getting their trucks. That’s messed up.

6/19 order, I see the same as mine getting built every Thursday. I called Ford and I talk to my salesman and they all say "I'm in the system and everything is clean" Why am I not getting scheduled? When others months ahead are? Did I piss off Mr. Ford?

Don’t really need the maverick as both my cars are paid off, but here in New Mexico, unless you have a vehicle with at least AWD and more ground clearance than a regular car, there’s not many places that you can explore. Not gonna be doing any extreme off roading by any means, but it would be nice to be able to use a lot of the dirt roads around here that lead to some beautiful spots without having to worry about either of my cars getting stuck
