I shopped Ridgeline but they are expensive...
I'm not a Honda fan, but thought to look at the Ridgeline at least online, ran the build and price wizard and got to over $50k before I even finished and said sayonara, Honda.

I was shopping for a new vehicle for about 8 months before making a decision, I really wanted to get a Dodge Durango with the 5.7L Hemi and then I was thinking about moving up to the larger Hemi, I just couldn't stomach the price. Then for a long time I wanted a Ford Bronco 2 Door Wildlands with the 2.7L V6, they had one with all the equipment/color I wanted at an amazing price (Only about $4000 more than my Maverick Tremor) sitting on a local lot, sadly I couldn't act on it because of the recalls Ford froze the sale of it. I watched the price skyrocket and just accepted it wasn't meant to be.

I checked out the Maverick and within a month of questioning folks here, I bought it. After this recent purchase, I learned I don't have the stomach for going into debt I used to have, even spending $40,000 made me queasy.

That's what many of us mean by cross-shopping.
I suppose you could call that cross-shopping, but I don't. The only vehicle I considered purchasing was the Maverick.

I frequently research vehicles to understand what is being offered by the manufacturers, but I don't consider it shopping until I have the intention of making a purchase. After all, that is the definition of shopping.

I'm a pilot, and I research new aircraft nearly every day as well, but I don't have the intention of buying any. Is that shopping?

2024 Escape Hybrid. Glad I went with the bed and not the box.
At the beginning of this year when wife needed an upgrade, I was doing the reverse, cross shopping the Mav, but she didn't want a truck :( but since we got zero percent and an otherwise solid deal on that Escape PHEV, which has been doing great, I was able to pull funds out of my ass for a Maverick for me, allll forrrr meeeee... but for some reason she is now super enthusiastic about it

The Escape made me want a Maverick more, not because the Escape was bad, but because I saw it still did great mpg on the 2.5 when the PHEV battery was run out, and drove nicely on it. So it was a case of "this is awesome, imagine how awesome it would be with a bed!"

Nothing! Had my eye on a new Ranger (had 4 of them starting in 1988), but when I heard about the Maverick, I put in my order. 👍

Before the Maverick was announced, my wife and I had been looking at mid-sized trucks. Then the shots of the test mules hit the web, and we decided to wait to replace our vehicle until we saw what the Maverick pricing would be -- because we needed a vehicle with a truck bed, but not a big one. I briefly considered the Santa Cruz, but the hybrid drivetrain on the Maverick closed the deal in my head immediately.

Yes. Please allow me to show you the Porsche 911 builds I have saved. 😀

On the original topic - my previous vehicle was rear-ended and totaled in March 2024, and for replacements, I looked at:
  • Maverick (placing a new dealer order) - it would've taken 6 months at the time and I decided if I could go without a vehicle for 6 months, I didn't need one at all. Would've been high $30K range.
  • Honda Passport/Ridgeline - I was coming from a 2014 Acura and the Passport would've been almost a direct replacement. I am normally a Honda guy, and even 18 months ago both those vehicles were like Rolls Royces compared to any Maverick yet released. The fuel mileage was comparable to what I had before - mid 20's for all intents and purposes. Would've been mid $40K range.
  • Volvo XC40 - I was fascinated by the design and tech on this one, but it would've been a splurge. High $40K range.
In the end, I found a barely-broken-in 2023 Maverick that had everything I needed (minus 4K, maybe) and ended up in the very low $30K range. It's been fun, but twisting the key to start, holding the window switches up, and having to be gentle to an interior made of damn milk cartons has been an experience lol.

Hybrid Crosstrek might have been on the radar if it had come along sooner, but reading the reviews popping up in the last week, nope. It is an excellent vehicle for it's time, 2015, that's when it would have been competitive, somebody tell Subaru it's 2025.

  • Hyundai Santa Cruz (too much like a car w/ no hybrid)
  • Honda Ridgeline (too expensive)
  • Ford Ranger (too much like a full size pick up)
  • Chevy Colorado (too much like a full size pick up)
  • Ford Maverick XL & XLT (No satellite radio, no premium sound)
