All this talk that a Maverick is incapable of off roading is crazy talk. There are videos all over of the Maverick doing some hairy stuff, and that was before the Tremor came out. The Tremor is basically the Bronco Sport without the camera and reduced angles. Angles are always sacrificed on trucks, and people have off road without cameras for decades. And the Bronco Sport participates in Off Roadeo...

For any reasonable ranch road, fire road, or typical double track the Maverick FX4 is just fine. Tremor could handle some technical stuff as well. They aren't a Wrangler or Bronco, but aren't designed to be. But all this talk that the AWD is just for people who want comfort in snow is crazy.
I wouldn't take a standard AWD mav off road with any confidence. It's great on road as others have pointed out.

This may belong in the Maverick vs. forum instead. So apologies in advance if it should. However, my question is that I’m really toying with the idea of swapping my Tacoma out for a Maverick. I have some pros and concerns listed below. What are your thoughts on the two given the info I’ve provided? I would be getting the FX4 2.0L Evoboost or possibly a Tremor down the road once availability becomes more prevalent.

My driving habits: My daily commute it roughly 50 miles round trip and I don’t need the rugged off road capabilities, however I am certain that in the last 10 years of being a Tacoma owner I have probably spent roughly 5% of my driving in places I’m pretty sure a Maverick would not reach.

Argument to keep Tacoma:
  • Off road capability - as mentioned above, the Maverick would suffice for 95% or off roading I do, however it’s always the last 5% that are the most memorable
  • More camper options - only current option for Maverick is a GFC. Unfortunately, I would require a camper.
  • Toyota reliability/longevity - I have no concerns about my Tacoma lasting to 250-300K without any catastrophic failures
  • Equity in resell value
Argument to get Maverick:
  • Significant improvement in MPG’s - after my research I would guess about 22-24mpg after lift, wheels, and other mods (my Tacoma gets 18mpg with current mods for reference)
  • Would be able to pocket some cash when I sell Tacoma
Main argument against Tacoma:
  • Horrible mpg for someone who drives 20,000-25,000 miles a year (Maverick would save about $700-$1000 on an annual basis)
Main/concern against Maverick:
  • Ford reliability - I’m bias towards Toyota’s reliability as I’ve been fortunate enough to never have any major issue. Moving to a company like Ford worries slightly
Sounds like U need to wait for the new coming soon! Toyota Hybrid truck which will be if believe what you read on the internet 🤔 it will be smaller than the Tacoma and be priced starting in the mid 20K range

lol....that "trail" is better than most of the township roads down here in SE Ohio....
I grew up in Meigs County and can assure you it is not…sorry to burst your ego but I’ll interpret your post as confirmation that the Maverick could handle it lol

OK, maybe a little exaggeration on my part. However, move up a couple counties, to Vinton/Hocking/etc.. We have some public roads that are more challenging than some off-road parks.

You wouldn't be able to get a tremor and 4k towing together, so you have to decide if marginally better off road performance is worth the trade off for 2k more towing over standard capacity.

Basically, if you need an efficient daily driver that does some truck stuff and has a decent AWD system to keep you from getting stuck on soft ground the mav is the way to go. It handles and rides more like a car/suv than a body on frame truck ever will. I was pleasantly surprised at the ride quality and handling. It's fun to drive.

If you want to off road, the mav is not really the right vehicle, Tremor or no. It's meant to keep you from getting stuck in a little mud or snow, that's all.

Reliability remains an issue as it's already been back to the dealer twice and am waiting on the air bag recall - not a plus.

By the way, you mentioned something about recalls but there is no deep dive required - all you need is the VIN and you can enter it into NHTSA site.

To clarify, of the things listed in the first post I think I should mention that off-roading is last on my list of factors. As mentioned the Maverick will meet 95% of my off roading needs. Most people seem to be focused on that, which is definitely warranted and appreciated but in order of importance I would rank them as follows:
  1. Reliability - can it reliably last 200k+ miles without catastrophic repairs. Assuming my Tacoma frame doesn’t Snap like half of you seem to think lol I am confident it checks this box. idk enough about Maverick to make the same assertion.
  2. MPG - Obviously the Maverick crushes the Tacoma in this category and where there seems to be the most definitive distinction amongst the two
  3. Off road capability- Obviously where the most contention exists, hence why most conversations are trending towards this

I haven't read all of the thread but what is the status of your Tacoma? Paid off? What's the actual private sale or trade in value of it? What would a Maverick in the trim you would prefer cost after trade in? What's the break even point from saving on fuel costs going to a Maverick from a Tacoma be (ie, factoring in everything else, how many years would it take for the gas savings of the Maverick to outweigh potential added financial obligation) I think these factors should weigh in if they haven't already since the off-road thing doesn't seem to matter as much. Personally speaking, this is my third Ford and reliability wise you're better off with a Toyota.

Paid off. I would actually be pocketing about $3K in the “trade” by selling to private party and buying from private party (I have a seller lined up asking $32K for an XLT with FX4 and Lux Package with 1500 miles, seems like a good deal).

They've said that a few times when it's not true and it makes me chuckle. Grew up in Muskingum Co but have been all over SE Ohio.

Meigs you say? Ravenswood, WV has my favorite Tudor's biscuit world.

Sounds like the question should be re-stated::

Used 2017 Tacoma or New 2023 Maverick and cash in pocket?

I vote 2023 Maverick.

Fair enough. It would technically be a 22 Maverick but, yes that is an alternative way to view the question for sure. Not much cash though ;)

Cash + MPG savings = larger down payment for your 2024 Tacoma Hybrid!!

I like the way you’re thinking and don’t think I haven’t thought about that. My only worry is that with how well Tacomas hold resale value I would be concerned that I would break even or in the red after it’s all said and done. We don’t really know how well Mavericks will hold value once more and more are on the road. Tacoma resale almost seems to defy your typical supply and demand

Old Rangers seem to still bring crazy money.
