I wish I knew exactly how many new batteries I've purchased over the decades for my cars, trucks, boats, and motorcycles...

Never, have I EVER, had to charge a new one to get it to work properly...
Never EVER until now did you have a computer controlled one. (Probably.)

Good luck.

After sitting for a couple of days in the cold, got in the Mav and opened up with dome lights and dash lights working fine even know AGM SOC was 48%. Short drive quickly charged to 60% SOC. The highest SOC I’ve seen was 74%. Wish I could consistently get a higher charge from Mav. AGM is the way to go for the Hybrid.

I am no mechanic and got tired of a dead battery so I sold my new Maverick for a three thousand dollar loss and am fixing up my old, reliable Toyota Tundra.
Also not an investor, I assume?

OK

I guess a brand new battery needs to be charged before installation???

Well, my battery charger is old, like me...

So I guess I'll buy a new trickle charger, so I can charge my brand new battery???

Or maybe I'll re-install my "crappy" Ford battery, that worked just fine???
After charging 100% and letting Maintenance functions complete then reset BMS and then run the "up to 8 hour new battery" learn procedure with truck locked with everything turned off. Be sure to not put the charger negative directly on the negative battery post. The BMS needs to see what was added to battery.

Ford Roadside assistance on its way. Mav dead in driveway again this will be 4th battery since June! The dealership first wants to accuse you of not driving it enough. Hahaha my Son has had a GMC suv parked in my yard for months, went to start it up to move it and it started right up. Explained that i never drive it less than 10miles, turned off Wifi, ford pass ap, automatic updates and keep key in Faraday pouch as far as i can from the truck as i can. Last drove it 15 miles on Tuesday. Ford guy just called me and told me he is emailing me what ford is saying about it needing a fix. I had already told him about it but at least now he believes me it isnt me. i have no ability to put it on a charger nor should i . Will take a new battery until they figure it out!!

Hybrid battery issues are common place. Even though the software fix is coming, I still would recommend replacing the current battery with an AGM battery.

If you got it via Amazon, or even at your local auto parts store, yes, there will be some drain on the battery. I would charge it up with a regular charger (shouldn't take more than an hour) and re-do the BMS thingee..........

Probably the vast majority of things you listed there had no monitoring system so the charging system could charge at just a certain amount.

I'm betting this is because of cheaper batteries overall now - so better tolerances required on charging routines now. And AGM has been that way from the start.

Monitoring systems now need to figure out what a full battery is - charging before 1st use just confirms that happens.
Just in case the battery has been sitting on shelf for awhile.

Well, I feel like the voltage tested fine, and everything works.

Only got one deep sleep message, so I'm not going to worry about it...

Let's see if the Maverick can figure it out when someone just does an old school remove and replace-

Mine works good too.

Deep sleep message has me concerned though...
That is concerning, as there is probably no truth to it actually getting down to 9.5 volts, and I'm sure the system doesn't think this new battery is 50% SOC.

There has been shown in some post a TSB or such that showed an error with truck system reading the info wrong or not updating it, and therefore doing the deep sleep.

Before deep sleep of low battery though - the other battery saver things should be happening - lights off quick, power port off quick, ect.
Do those happen too, or just the Fordpass notice?

IIRC it was a disconnect negative for 5 min (follow manual about pausing after key off), (they load tested battery which you don't need, and recharged to full), connected neg, BMS reset, sit overnight locked.

ETA - found it, I was wrong about process, and corrected volts above, and my IIRC.
SSM 51449 - confusing, is it "Inaccurate Deep Sleep Notifications" or "vehicle is going into deep sleep".
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2023/MC-10233738-0001.pdf

Put here for perhaps easier finding.
Vehicle Has Entered Deep Sleep Mode message is expected if the vehicle has not been started for 14 consecutive days, battery voltage is at/below 9.5 volts or the body control module (BCM) 12 volt battery state of charge (SoC) drops below 50%.

Now that is a battery drain that SSM is talking about.

It's sounding like Ford either isn't trusting the techs to do parasitic draw troubleshooting well, or dealerships are saying we ain't spending that kind of time on warranty item you pay us 1 hr for.
And Ford is trusting they'll find a software solution.

I'm surprised Ford with these kind of module systems for years (like everyone else) doesn't already have a software routine for disabling modules pulling more than spec'd amps when it's supposed to be asleep. And then reporting which one in error code.

@Mareys

I'm sorry to hear that. What a hassle dealing with this nonsense. FOUR stock batteries?

As you can find in multiple threads on this forum: the fix is really an AGM type 12V battery which Ford won't install as it is not the stock battery in these Maverick Hybrids.

One of these batteries is about $130 online shipped to your door. Install it in the truck yourself, it drops right in, and even this is all you do, these non-start issues will almost certainly be sorted.

There's one more possible cause and that's a well documented cable issue on the 2022 and early 2023 Hybrids. Refer to CSP-22B39 for this.

I would do the battery first for sure.

Good luck.

Cheers!

Perhaps it was delayed message that never got out and the timing just bad.

Seems to have a full charge???

But then again, this is my first modern AGM battery...

I'm wondering if there's some other way to test the charge???

I remember the day I bought my old trusty Century charger/starter back in 1995-

It was pretty high tech 30 years ago, AND made in the USA...

Still works great, but not for AGM batteries, as I understand it???

You can use that century charger fine on AGM. Set it at 2 amp/12 volt and let it rip. The only issue is it may not charge up to 13.00v +/- , I assume it's somewhat intelligent and is set to lead acid of around 12.85-12.90 max volts which is slightly less than full with your new AGM. But it can still be used, it won't damage the battery at all.

It's my understanding that the AGM setting on the new chargers just up their voltage slightly vs lead acid. There may be a slightly different charging profile as well but that isn't a huge deal.
