The BMS "reset" tells the system "This is what a fully charged battery looks like."

So make sure it IS 100% topped off before doing the reset procedure.

"Resetting" with a 60% battery will keep it 60% more or less forever, or until the next "reset".

OK

I guess a brand new battery needs to be charged before installation???

Well, my battery charger is old, like me...

So I guess I'll buy a new trickle charger, so I can charge my brand new battery???

Or maybe I'll re-install my "crappy" Ford battery, that worked just fine???

That is almost always the case, regardless of battery size or chemistry. Batteries, whether automotive, or in a mobile phone or laptop, don’t sit around fully-charged waiting for people to buy them. In this case it is critical to start fully charged when you do the BMS reset.

I wish I knew exactly how many new batteries I've purchased over the decades for my cars, trucks, boats, and motorcycles...

Never, have I EVER, had to charge a new one to get it to work properly...

Seems to have a full charge???

But then again, this is my first modern AGM battery...

I'm wondering if there's some other way to test the charge???

I remember the day I bought my old trusty Century charger/starter back in 1995-

It was pretty high tech 30 years ago, AND made in the USA...

Still works great, but not for AGM batteries, as I understand it???

I didn’t have to charge my AGM. Let it sit over night and drive the next day. So far so good. Everything is working, especially the interior lights

Yes, doesn't look like it's for AGM.

@Vaportrail

Not doing the BMS reset and not getting 100% in that AGM on the bench before installation is not the end of the world. Over time the BMS will figure it out and slowly get the State of Charge values correct for your battery. It wouldn't surprise me if this takes a few weeks, but likely it will simply sort itself.

Your deep sleeps should be gone then.

But do keep this forum updated if you still have problems.

FYI: the reason why Ford is doing this funny 60-80% charging on the 12V battery is to squeeze the last bit of fuel efficiency out of the vehicle. If the battery is "full enough" you simply stop charging, and now no gasoline is wasted on feeding a battery. I don't like it, but with the correct battery type (AGM) this works actually fine.

And you could have used your old fashioned battery charger for charging that new AGM battery without a problem. Just don't overdo it: maybe 3-4 hours on the 2A low setting at 12V would have been fine.

Cheers!

Just make sure you have a charger compatible with AGM batteries.

3 years + on original battery (no agm) . Just under 10k miles . Always garaged here in Central Florida . Always turn off start/stop . so far so good . Does sleep if not driven in 4/5 days . I do carry a jumpstarter just in case . Not a perfect vehicle but I have had much worse new vehicles . Happy with maverick so far .

You just need a charger compatible with AGM batteries.

FWIW, I put my truck on a battery maintainer every now & then. Just takes a minute to connect and no battery issues at all in 20k miles on the OEM FLA battery.

No, this should not be necessary, but I prefer it to buying & installing replacement batteries or fighting with a ford dealer over an hour away.

Wow, what a PITA-

I personally avoid the dealership if at all possible.

3 months old, dead battery is some serious bad luck.

This UPlus Amazon battery is supposed to be 3 years replacement guarantee.

Not sure how hard it would be to get Amazon to ship a replacement, if it starts to die early?
