Of course there is a catch. I've bought from dealers who do this before. The catch is you must service it exclusively at their dealership and by their schedules.

It is not worth the paper it is written on. That's why they offer it for free.
Not all of them require that. I wouldn’t pay extra for the warranty, but I did get one included from one dealership. I asked if I had to get it serviced there (it was a 2 hour drive from my house). They said that I did have to get it serviced from a certified location not necessarily them. They recommended against DIY.

The one from my dealership requires that you get it serviced there if you live within 50 miles (I am 46 miles away). But, you still have to follow their maintenance schedule, have it done at a dealership, have all records, and some other stipulations which I can't recall I bet the number of times customers have met the criteria to take advantage of the warranty after the manufacturer's warranty expired can be counted on one hand and it's one of the highest volume VW dealerships in the western U.S.

So true!! You see so many huge trucks with one person in it. Status symbol like the Hummer was.

I had a Mazda B2000 of the Ford Courier generation too, and loved that little thing. This feels bigger, but in the right way.

The dealership I bought my jetta from does this, and it's exactly the case. They also charge outrageous prices for basic maintenance ($125 for an oil change on my economy car). I wonder how many angry calls they field every single day from previous customers who realize that they don't meet the criteria for the lifetime warranty?
Not that it should cost $125.....but the jetta has a splash guard that must be removed in order to change the oil. 8 screws, 3 bolts, and then a couple of locking tabs to get it off. Kind of a pain in the ass. Definitely additional time required....so it should be a little more expensive.

I've changed the oil in it multiple times and the place down the street charges $49, and that includes fully synthetic. It's not a fun car to work on (even changing the engine air filter is a PITA), but that's irrelevant to the fact that the dealership charges twice as much as anybody else.

That's dealer pricing for you. My dealer wanted to charge me $150 to replace a brake bulb, air filter, and in-cabin filter. Cost me $25 in parts and 15 minutes. Could have been faster, but I thought it was a good teaching experience to walk through the steps with my 15 year old kid, and show him how much $ can be saved.

Not meaning to hijack this post, but looking at the sign behind those trucks, how come most major dealerships don't do a Lifetime Limited Warranty? I keep my vehicles up to date on all services, is there a catch?
This was a picture I took at Bowen Scarff Ford in Kent, Wa. They offer lifetime warranty on Drivetrain, Transmission and engine. I took this picture mintues after they moved it to the front lot. They moved the F-250 soon after.
