I had a 68 VW Beetle. Got between 21-23mpg. The economy car of the 60s. The economy was the $500 to get another engine, or the $150 I paid for the car.
I also remember my long commute and alternate days I was allowed to purchase fuel (based on the last number on the license plate). This was a problem with a tiny gas tank. Also, a time when you had to show you had less than 1/2 tank before being allowed to fill up.
I think I spent more money adding oil than I did on gas.
VW's were great. A shade treee mechanic could work on them. I changed the oil in my parents VW's The darn thing didn't have a oil filter, but rather a oil screen to catch any boulders lol.

Back in the day when I was a young whipper snapper, back when I had to walk to school up hill, both ways !

My first car as a 1972 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with a big ass 454 engine. In 1976 gas was .54 cents per gallon. I got 15 mpg around town if IF I behaved.

We calculated wether or not the girl we were taking out was cute enough to cruise the boulevard with and be seen with and spend the gasoline or if she was a girl that would be more fun in the back seat. :’P

My birth certificate shows I’m 67,
My brain still thinks I’m twenty something,
My body is holding at 40,

And I miss the old cars big time.

Im gonna go walk up a mountain and contemplate this on, ā€˜The Tree Of Woe’
The big gas hogs are gone for good unless you want a Bently to go field driving in. The average pickup has gotten overweight so those are still available but they're not going to take you back.
There's some nice retro bikes out there and the Harleys never really got too advanced so that's an option.
I'm an immature 69yo and I can't seem to let go of my '91 Miata even though it's not as comfortable to get in and out of as my ass is about 5" off the ground when I'm wearing it but it's still a lot of fun.
Check out the local car shows. Lots of nice cars there.

I'm late 70s and on my second Maverick, 2025 Tremor. Setup for off-road, the first thing I did was swap out the off road tires for Michelin Defenders 2. Now the truck is smooth and quiet on the road. The truck is fast, by far the fastest vehicle ever owned. It makes me feel younger when driving.

Thanks DAD from a 67 y.o. šŸ˜† . I have a neighbor who is 76 or 77 and the very definition of a grumpy old man. When ever I feel like I am old I just talk to him and I feel so much younger. Hope you make it to 100 John.

Am going to be 75 to soon, I just traded in my 25 lariat for a lobo, the Lariat was great but I missed my early 22 fx4, I liked hearing the engine and feeling the shifts, call me old fashioned it's OKAY, the lobo is a different animal, fun to drive and a looker reminds me of my hotrod days, the hell with the good gas mileage!!

I started working at 12 mowing lawns and working at 2 gas stations, I mowed Ruthie's lawn for 2 years didn't have the heart to charge her, she passed when I was just turning 16, she left me her 2 tone 56 chevy, it was like new, no miles she was sick for years.
My neighbor owned a body shop started working for him masking cars after school till 10 at night, painter came in AM all the cars were prepped and ready to paint, by the time I was 20 I was doing heavy collision work and doing off the cuff estimates while the owner sat in the bar across the street. Going to be 75 few months on my 3rd Maverick, driving a Lobo now and loving it. How many kids today are working 2 jobs at 12, lucky if there working at 20 if you can pull them away from their phone or computer.

I’m still on my 1st Maverick and most likely it will be the last! Not because I don’t like it but I’m averaging less than 5k miles per year.

I’m old and dont have the patience to read through all 36 pages, but it’s good to see a thread that hasn’t had whining about sooo many problems.
I used to beat on my cars when I was younger. Is there a correlation?
