VW's were great. A shade treee mechanic could work on them. I changed the oil in my parents VW's The darn thing didn't have a oil filter, but rather a oil screen to catch any boulders lol.I had a 68 VW Beetle. Got between 21-23mpg. The economy car of the 60s. The economy was the $500 to get another engine, or the $150 I paid for the car.
I also remember my long commute and alternate days I was allowed to purchase fuel (based on the last number on the license plate). This was a problem with a tiny gas tank. Also, a time when you had to show you had less than 1/2 tank before being allowed to fill up.
I think I spent more money adding oil than I did on gas.
