Got ya beat. I’m 73 and have owned well over 100 Ford, Mercury and Lincoln’s. About half and half used/new. Used mostly were 1 year old with less than 10,000 miles on them. Before I started buying Mavs I drove F150s. I’ve owned 10 Ford supercrews, my wife drove mostly Tauruses. Before Tauruses it was Torinos and Fairmonts. Have had just about any vehicle Ford made other than a Mustang. Never liked trying to get in and out of a Mustang. Currently we own a 24 HPR hybrid Mav and a 25 eruption green hybrid AWD Mav. They are upgrades from the 22 ecoboost AWD and 23 hybrid we owned.
If you didn't like the Mustang you wouldn't like my old '91 Miata. Less than half the size of the Mustang.

Like the looks of the Miata and numerous years of the mustang but I didn’t like trying to climb out of them even when I was younger. I always liked the 2 door coupes. When I was younger I owned two door galaxies and Fairlanes. My favorites were 2 64s I owned. One was a 2 door Galaxie 500 coupe it was midnight black with 352 4 bbl carb with factory dual exhaust. The other was a white Fairlane 500 sport coupe that had a blown 260 V8. I bought it for $400 bucks and transplanted a 289 HiPo out of a totaled mustang gt. I knew a guy at salvage yard and he sold me the 289 for $600 bucks. I made the mistake of not buying the 4 speed tranny from the stang as the Fairlane was automatic and I didn’t want try swapping it over to manual. Yea I know big mistake.

I had a couple of those back when. None of them were hopped up but the big motors still did the job. Funny how I didn't have much money then but didn't care about gas milage.

Gas was cheap.
Income was LOW. It all has to be put in time frame perspective.
Gar was cheap when I was a teen...certainly compared to now,
BUT, I rarely had enough money on me to fill my tank. "I'll take
$2 worth.....or IF lucky....$3 worth. That was about half a tank. LOL!

I had a job in high school making 50 cents an hour in a supermarket. Had an old '56 buick and remember gas was 25 cents a gallon. There were no school buses and Buick saved the nearly 2 mile trek to high school. All in all, times were good!

I bought the 64 Fairlane back in 76 my first year as a teacher. The car had been sitting in yard of a house that I passed on the way to work. One day on way home from work, I just stopped and knocked on door and ended up buying the car. The body and interior was in decent shape but engine was toast.

I remember when gas was 29.9. We have a 56 VW and it didn't have a fuel gauge. My dad would open the hood and put a dipstick in the fuel tank to check the fuel level lol. Back then you had to manually calculate your gas mileage or you were left on the side of the road. Luckilly that didn't happen to us as my dad was really good at that calculation.

Ironically my first car could have been a Maverick but my Dad was a Dodge/Plymouth guy and I wound up getting a Dart instead.

When I started driving I was making 1.25/ hr. Gas at the WACO water works was 59.9, name brand gas in my little town (think Paul Simon song) was as much as 72.9. So in theory I could get 2 gallons for an hours labor. Minimum wage here is now 12.77/hour and gas at Shell is under 3.00/gallon. So 4 gallons for an hours labor. Gas is CHEAPER than the 70s.

Interesting parallel. I'm sure you remember the oil embargo that lasted from October 1973 to March 1974 when you could hardly buy any gas. Long lines for the pumps could be seen for blocks. When I bought gas it was generally later on in the evening like 11PM when the crowds thinned out. It was a roll of the dice however because the gas stations may have run out of gas by then. I took the chance instead of waiting in long lines.

Back in the day when I was a young whipper snapper, back when I had to walk to school up hill, both ways !

My first car as a 1972 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with a big ass 454 engine. In 1976 gas was .54 cents per gallon. I got 15 mpg around town if IF I behaved.

We calculated wether or not the girl we were taking out was cute enough to cruise the boulevard with and be seen with and spend the gasoline or if she was a girl that would be more fun in the back seat. :’P

My birth certificate shows I’m 67,
My brain still thinks I’m twenty something,
My body is holding at 40,

And I miss the old cars big time.

Im gonna go walk up a mountain and contemplate this on, ‘The Tree Of Woe’

My MIL had a green Dodge Dart with very low miles. She drove it 5 miles to work & back. When she retired they sold it and bought a Buick, imagine that. At that time, my future wife had a Mercury Comet, which was the sister car of the Ford Maverick. I see that there are a few of them around for sale today, and the asking/selling price would almost cover the cost of the MAV twuck.

I had a 68 VW Beetle. Got between 21-23mpg. The economy car of the 60s. The economy was the $500 to get another engine, or the $150 I paid for the car.
I also remember my long commute and alternate days I was allowed to purchase fuel (based on the last number on the license plate). This was a problem with a tiny gas tank. Also, a time when you had to show you had less than 1/2 tank before being allowed to fill up.
I think I spent more money adding oil than I did on gas.

Mine was green as well, 1970 Dodge Dart with a 318 engine which I traded for a brown 1972 Plymouth Duster with the 340.
