Much like the Maverick, buying the first edition probably wasn't the best idea. Guess I'm off to Home Depot for bolts and weather stripping. 😬
how do we know the hardware is going to rust??

and the weather stripping might help but I'm not sure it is 100% necessary. maybe at some point after it's been installed for a while I'll check into how much stuff got in there :p

I also think that possibly, weather stripping might hold moisture longer that could be problematic. I will also evaluate after monitoring the area.

Update with some experience and recommendations:

I had previously mentioned using different hardware. I definitely recommend this. The hardware I got from Home Depot and was relatively inexpensive for being "specialty" hardware flange bolts ($10). Regular hardware would have been much less and even that I recommend over the hardware that comes with it, but the think the serrated flange bolts are the best approach and eliminate the need for extra washers and lock washers. Here are the correct sizes:

Had my original kit for months, like many waiting for more 'comfortable' weather before attempting. Seriously great post & recommendations. Have Home Depot here too. How many of each bolt size did you buy? May be clear if I opened the Mabett box, but wanted to ask just in case I can't figure it out. Thanks!

I just received this kit. The two M12 bolts and flat/lock washers are now black - seem to be painted in an effort to prevent rusting. The caged nuts are not painted and may still rust over time (they do not appear to be plated). I hit them with some CRC Heavy Duty Corrosion Inhibitor and let dry before installing - maybe this will help.

Are the new kit bolts bigger?

Is there any risk of electrochemical degradation when mating aluminum to steel?

Since pretty much every part is either, painted, anodized, galvanized, or zinc plated, there is little chance of direct contact between anything.

What about via the bolts, bolt holes and nuts?

So when it comes to existing bolts on the maverick. Those are all galvanized and we are only sandwiching anodized aluminum pieces between them and the truck.

Then there are the 6 holes in the kit itself. of those involve 2 of them into zinc plated nuts, The others screw into the anodized brackets. Now there will always be a chance of rust in areas where the nut and bolt threads interlock as the forces can scratch off the coating. I can even say there was mild surface rust on mine when I took it apart after a few months. Thats to be expected on metal to metal connections that arent inherently corrosion resistant.

I just had my undercarriage treated with fluid film. Wanted to get that applied before I installed the shield cover, but I think installation is now going to be pretty messy.

It's not. I applied fluid film before I installed it.
