My 24 Lariat Hybrid had the hard TriFold factory installed. It was secure but leaked a little on both sides of the tailgate.
I installed a Gator soft rollup on my XLT FX4 (from RealTruck). It does flap som at highway speed, but thus far actually leaks less than the hard TriFold did.
i used a ā€œdollopā€ of clear sealant in the rail seal as mentioned above. No leaks at front at all.

I got the hard tri-fold cover from the factory. I haven't taken it through a high-pressure car wash, but very little water has gotten in from rain, and when I washed it (I've barely had it a month), very little water got in. I'm very pleased with how water resistant it is.

I have a new 2024 Maverick [5,000 miles] with the roll up bed cover. water gets in the back when it rains. If I go to a car wash the back end of the bed is soaked.
I want to swap it out for the tri fold cover. Ya think I’ll have any luck with Ford?
no
You need to add a gasket to the rear

I have the Ford Factory install trifold and was very surprised how little (soapsuds) ended up in the bed, the one time I went thru a touchless car wash. When I washed myself, just a couple small drips. Expected that it would not be water tight... However, it is better than my expectations. Only had the truck a couple of months.

Careful installation and a gasket on the tailgate has kept my bed dry except for a few drops here and there.

If the tonneau has a open gap between the its end and the tailgate when up then that not right. All of the tonneaus I have used at least reach the tailgate when its up. As noted no tonneau is waterproof but I get very little water ingress and usually only when going through a car wash. If its a Ford tonneau I would take it to the dealer and have it adjusted or replaced.

I have a 22 Maverick XLT and I installed a Truxedo Lo Pro Soft Roll Up cover. When I first installed it water leaked into both the window side and tailgate side, so I added weather stripping to front and back. Since than I have never had a leak. So, I would try weather stripping first before replacing the cover. I think I purchased the stripping on amazon.

Unibody design so unless you run a bead of silicone near the cab and down the sides underneath the cover it’ll get some water intrusion. Just depends on how much you can tolerate.

If you add the tailgate seal, the Synetic rolling cover keeps the bed bone dry, and secure. Only drawback is you loose length at the top towards the cab. I'll simply use a bed extender for large items, when needed. - Hauling 4x8, doors, and 4x8s isn't affected.

I have the Tri fold installed by Ford. It leaks in a light rain and car wash and the service department told me that they all leak. If you want to keep your things dry keep some large garbage bags in the storage area of the truck bed.

All are poorly designed but what you expect now days. Had the first sports track in the south as a demo and it had a Tri fold made of a better hard composite material and it never leak. Ford quality is long gone!

This is the only place mine leaks, and very little. Only with pressure.

Like someone said earlier, put the tools in a container and be done with it.

@ET bagel , if it helps, this is the one I use. I strap it to the bulkhead wall under the rear window with a small ratchet strap so it doesn't move.

While it wont stop a real thief, I do also have a small padlock on it to at least slow down someone looking for a quick smash and grab.

Huksy brand 30 gallon.

I sent the post/picture above and I don’t give a shit about a little H2O getting in there! No tools, nothing but a few sand bags for rear control. I’m happy 😊

I centered the rails side to side fwd and back and looked inside for light intrusion until i found the best fit. Then added 4 more rail clamps. Added some self-adhesive foam tape strategically and I can leave a tuxedo in it in a hurricane. We'll maybe not that good but under normal circumstances I don't get water in it.
