For anyone who keeps their hybrid trucklet in the garage, do you ever think it may combust? Once those things start, they’re pretty much going to burn the place down.
Hadn’t given it much thought till I saw an article about how hybrids are more likely to catch fire than both EVs and ICE vehicles.

UPDATE: Turns out the article was sketchy at best, which works for me. No need to respond further.

I thought the Hybrid fires were related to engine failure.
Chances of that happening with the engine off in the garage?

Not concerned. If I have a vehicle catch fire in my garage, it is already going to do some MAJOR damage by the time it is responded to by the fire department.

Source of this article? I sure don't worry about it, I'm not aware of any of these catching fire because of the hybrid battery.

I am always concerned about fire! I live 16 minutes drive time from nearest fire station. So my 1100 foot garage is detached 40 feet from my house! Both are metal roofed and all exterior wood is covered with metal. Garage is detached primarily because it will be safer and it will be covered under the up to 10% of house amount PLUS an additional $50k rider. In any case I keep most of the junipers cleared at least 400 feet from my house and garage and native grass below 10-12 inches. Am not particularly worried that either of my hybrid mavericks will spontaneously combust!

I believe Ford concluded in their report that the failure rate of this issue with the 2.5 was 0.12 incidents per 1,000 vehicles. That doesn't mean those incidents will lead to fires, but rather, engine failure which could lead to fire.

That might sound scary, but that effectively means Ford is saying 1.2, let's just round it up to 2 people, out of 10,000 mavericks, is gonna have their engine fail due to that manufacturing defect we've discussed before. Or about 12 out of 100,000 owners.

I believe this was the failure rate Ford cited in their report when they issued this recall.

No.

Not the least bit more worrisome than parking a gasoline only or diesel only vehicle.

Parking your gas lawn mower in a garage is about 10x more dangerous. Those are frequently not air tight, fumes leak, and could create an explosion or fire with an ignition source.

And don't recharge ANYTHING lithium powered unattended.

About 5 years ago the #1 cause of garage fires came from people recharging LiIon batteries for power tools.

NTSB

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), hybrid vehicles have a higher risk of catching fire than gasoline-powered vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs):

  • Hybrid vehicles: 3,475 fires per 100,000 vehicles sold

  • Gasoline-powered vehicles: 1,530 fires per 100,000 vehicles sold

  • EVs: 25 fires per 100,000 vehicles sold

Some causes of vehicle fires include:

  • Battery: Battery management and electric drive

  • Petrol engines: Defective fuel lines or hot surfaces

  • 12-volt on-board electronics: Shorts circuits or defective equipment
If a hybrid car catches fire, firefighters can use a large amount of water to cool the fire and battery. They should also have enough personnel and equipment on hand to monitor the battery's heat and any potential secondary ignition.

The risk of fire with early hybrid Mavericks was a problem with the manufacturing of the gas engine -- and it would happen when the vehicle was in motion. The gas engine would fail, but people wouldn't immediately pull over and stop the truck because the electric motor would continue to drive the truck forward.

That's not a "while you're parked" problem. That is "people hear a loud bang from the engine but are too stupid to pull over and keep driving" problem. It was a problem that affected not just the Maverick but the hybrid Escapes and the Lincoln version of the Escape (whose name my morning pre-caffeine brain can't remember).

A lot of vehicle fires come down to mechanical failure, and Hybrids have more complexity. It's not a shocker. But, also, I ain't worried.

I have 2 Hybrids, both in my garage. I'm more concerned about my electric scooter when I'm charging it (the power brick gets hot!). But nah, you probably have a ton of Dewalt batteries and other things in there that have the same potential as the Maverick to blow up, yet everybody has Lithium battery packs and flashlights all over the place.

Always concerned about my car catching fire in the garage. But I've never had a vehicle catch on fire at all (knock on wood) so not very likely. But as @paneubert said above, not exactly much can be done about it if it happens other than get your family out safely and figure out which construction contractor to contact...
