Just got back from my 24 Hybrid XL's inaugural road trip, 2500 miles. Flawless, with 42, 36, 44, and 40 mpg tanks. I was very pleased.

I got back Sunday afternoon and feeling a bit under the weather, I postponed cleaning out the truck until today. Grabbed the fob and hit unlock. Nothing. Tried the other fob. Nothing. Manually unlocked the door and checked the voltage on the 12V battery, 4 volts.

I did get a message from the Ford Pass app prior about going into deep sleep mode. I thought it was odd, but ignored it.

I'm charging the battery now, but it shouldn't have died since there are only 2800 miles on the clock. Could there be any reason for this happening besides a bad battery? I didn't touch the headlights (on auto) or the overhead light.

The truck did sit at the dealers for three months between my test drive and driving it home (backup cam stop sale), but they assured me they were taking care of it.

Once the battery is charged (if it charges), is there anything special I need to do to reset the system?

I'll bet your battery is badly sulphated from sitting at the dealership for 3 months without being recharged. The BMS woefully undercharges the battery, so it never recovers. You're most probably going to need a new battery under warranty.

Had the same thing in Dec. '23, only happened once. Charged battery, it was fine until I changed it preemptively months later. This should be the fix though:

Good info. I scheduled a service appointment. Ford Pass sent me a Service Engine Soon Warning.

I did use AC a bit for the first time in the last leg of my road trip.

The battery charger didn't do a thing for the battery so I had to jump start the Maverick with my ever trustworthy Ranger. I had to move the Ranger to move the Maverick. When I got back to the Maverick, it was in electric mode. Yet, it started right up when I goosed the gas. Does the traction battery run the alternator? If so, why couldn't I start the truck? Does draining the 12V battery eventually drain the traction battery?

No alternator.

12V battery is only used to run the accessories (radio, lights) when you are NOT with Key ON or Started.
It closes the connection to bring on the HVB battery when you go to On.

The HVB indeed spins up the generator motor to start the engine.
Or if moving already, the gearing changes with the same motor and engine is started.

No draining the 12V doesn't touch the HVB.
Hence 12V being dead on it's own.

And ya, cheap battery to begin with - those 3 months killed it.
Likely will get a slightly bigger one this time, so it should die slower in the future.
Now you can read all the posts about it.

Battery dead from long sit discharged? Probably.

Jump box, always a good idea to have about you,

I believe we don't have a serpentine belt or alternator per se, it is all built into the ecvt (?) of the Maverick...i am still working on how it all works, myself.

Again, the way I explain it to myself is that The 12 volt battery is a "kicker battery" where it makes the electrical connections to use your traction battery and it will start your engine when it needs to as you don't have a starter either (yep, part of the Ecvt as well, I do believe).

When the Maverick is turned off, the 12 volt battery keeps you in occasional contact/reports in to the mother ship (Ford), let's you use your Ford app, and check your tire pressures and fuel level, range remaining, etc.

Hope this helps, and more knowledgeable answers may be forthcoming if I got anything wrong!

The E-manual is a handy thing for me, while I figure stuff out.

Cheers,

Andy

Oh, and let's hope they drop in a good AGM battery for you, while they are at it.

FLA batteries just can't cut it for very long.

No, the 12 volt battery can't drain the HVB. The 12 volt battery does not need a lot of strength to operate the vehicle. It needs (I think) about 11.3 volts to engage the computer that brings the HVB on line. The 12 volt is actually charged by the HVB even when the ICE is not actually running but in the "Ready" mode. The ICE has to actually be running to charge the HVB other than by regenerative braking. The vehicles' computer will not normally let the 12 volt die totally when in the "Ready" mode, the HVB will charge it. A badly sulfated battery won't charge enough to last long once you shut down.

Got it.

So is it a design flaw that with a dead 12V battery, you can't start the truck using the HVB, assuming it has enough units of firkin*furlong^2/fortnight ^2?

Note: 1 firkin*furlong^2/fortnight ^2 is a little more than 11 ergs or a little less 3.14*10^-10 watt-hours. Now you know.

If a design flaw then most hybrids do it. So likely not.

Probably because otherwise it would make a high voltage system that could kill someone be "connected" all the time.

Yes you can still dig around into connections and kill yourself anyway, most use orange to indicate those wires & connections.
But it sounds like the reason is for safety from that system when the truck is off.
Probably the assumption is - if you are smart enough to know a running engine could seriously mess you up putting your hands where you shouldn't, then you should know that applies to a running EV system too.
But if it's off it should be safer. And it is.

I have a 22 non-hybrid, I took mine in for an oil change a few weeks back and they did a few recall things including replacing my battery as there is a recall on certain ones. Have you checked your recalls in the ford pass app to see if you have one on the truck?

No recalls in Ford Pass. Seems it's just a service bulletin.

I have an appointment at the dealer this coming week. With all this good information, I will definitely tell them to replace the battery if they don't offer to.

There were brand new Mav's '22-'24 with depleted batteries at dealers due to transit time and sitting on the lot, dealers are/were not charging them. Could be that yours started off low, and went even lower sitting for 3 months, but in my experience driving it and using accessories depletes the battery too.

Dealer did the software update and replaced the battery under warranty. Thank you all!
