Just Google image search "steering knuckle", every single one of them will have several areas (all mating surfaces) ground down like this. These areas need to be paint free for a precise interface with other parts.

Lots of little issues. I agree with the poster they just lazy and grinded the part down and sent it out the door.

On the 2.0L the rear muffler is were dirt gets up on the electrical parts on that side of the bed inverter other side has plastic to keep stuff out should've put a muffler shroud to prevent it lots of dust and clumps of dirt in there remove the tail like on passenger side looms new driver side lots of mud clumped up.

Had electrical issues from day one drive train warning as well. Ptu warning the rear differential bound up then worked after throwing a code dealer simply says can't replicate .

The stero makes popping noise when turning off or on and randomly crashes. The dash lights stero all flicker after it rains. The engine is hot enough to cook an egg on says temp is fine but you can feel the heat coming off it. (Never had a car get that hot)

The auto dimming is super annoying and you can't really change it. Other light modes don't really seem to do anything diffrent.

The window and dash creeks had to fix it my self. Window was add heat to defrost and the rattles were roof and by the drivers feet I just pushed and pulled on every panel and tapped on them with a fist till it worked out

So far been into service for warranty alot. Always can't replicate see you later. Auto start stop not working just a low battery drive it more was the answer. Battery drains over a few days went and drove it through a whole tank of gas it wasn't able to bring the battery above 12.6 volts the auto start stop won't work when it's that low. Used a battery charger on it 4 times already it drops down to 12.6 then sits there just enough so auto start doesn't work but it doesn't go dead while driving. Really fishy electrical problem.

Going to have to call in again tomorrow it takes like 3 weeks or more to get an appointment

So far 27km didn't see that one before it just popped up as a maintenance said other/unknown

955km ptu power reduced code
2597km new tires and electric issue
2999 2 unknown electrical it used to say(auto start stop)

3175 electrical clutch axle radio
87121 service and check battery agian

Warranty has been very frustrating get it then back out can't replicate. The dealers don't seem to want to deal with anything electrical. Had wires under the hood that have tape on them just electrical tape and it was loose. Noticed the service guy taped it up tight because I left it like that and noticed they're doing something every now and agian.

I think that's really petty stuff. That machined area to smooth the surface will never be an issue in the life of the vehicle. If you don't like seeing the surface rust, get a can of rustoleum truck bed coating or rust converter and dab it on. You people that see this as a worry issue must not have real problems to worry about.

This is not an uncommon occurrence. There's also nothing wrong with it. The only reason you're noticing it at all is because the rest of the spindle is painted. If it weren't painted the whole thing would be flash-rusted, the surface would look "even" and you wouldn't complain.

There maybe some quality issues somewhere, but the paint on the spindle isn't one of them. It only stands out because the spindle was painted prior to the machining operation. Most factory spindles I've seen aren't even painted.

This is a nothingburger.

in 2010 I bought a new Toyota Tacoma. It had several what I considered serious recalls. Toyota recalled the truck to inspect and repair the frame for rust through in the northern states. If it was in danger of frame rust through they woul replace the whole frame. If they considered it ok they would clean and undercoat the frame ( I got undercoating).

Then there was the rear leaf springs which could break unexpectedly and puncture the gas tank ( I got new springs)

And the airbag recall which included many brands.

Having said all that it was a great and reliable truck. I sold it because it rode Like a truck and as we get older my wife wouldn’t ride in it anymore.
I'm in the exact same situation. I have a 2013 Tacoma and know all about the frame rust issues, recalls, treatments, etc. Mine has a little surface rust on some of the welds but it's perfectly fine. Toyota undercoated it a few years back. But anyway, yes, even legendary reliable vehicles like Tacomas have some potential big issues; mine's been 100% trouble free. I'd keep it forever except that my wife ins't comfortable driving it (stick shift) and yea, I'm getting older and it feels more like an uncomfortable truck every day. I'm never going to try crossing the Rubicon in a truck, so the Mav will suit us much better.

.... looks like this is probably an isolated case.
IF an isolated case, THEN might it be a warranty issue, a spindle that made it to production without being machined before sending it to production so it was "modified" in production to be the way the spindle should be? Other guys, look at your spindles. Are or are they not flat like this but coated?

Any of us who have had to bust loose nuts on spindles that have a serious torque setting to them already and rust has added to that, know what this picture brings to mind; a BIG hammer smacking away at a LONG breaker bar with maybe a piece of pipe over that handle while trying to keep the socket in place and HOPING you do not round off the edges of the nut!

If anyone does search for steering knuckles for most all vehicles this is normal machining process for cast pieces. You can also go to any forums for other cars you’re interested in and see typical “rust” on new vehicles in same area’s. Here is picture for a new steering knuckle of Honda Ridgeline I googled please notice the “hacking” as described is precision machine work to proper dimensions.

I have been in the auto industry for 20+ years. The last 9 in aftermarket parts. I've never seen anything "shaved" like this, especially on a new car. My 2013 Audi and my 2017 and 2020 Chryslers never looked like this.
But if that's what Ford does then that's what they do. I've never owned a Ford so I guess I expect more. Surface rust on à week old part doesn't look good in my opinion
You first said that they were hacked then shaved. Its called "machining". Almost all castings and forgings are machined on functional surfaces.

One could argue that they should have been painted after machining.

Just ran outside and randomly shoved my phone behind the front wheel, here's what it looks like after a weekend of gravel roads and 12000kms. I have no issue with this

I love my maverick hybrid...of course I don't crawl underneath it looking for anything that does not look "great"...but again, that's just me. I'm happy as hell with my 23k purchase.
