I’ve poked around a bit on this already and decided to do the first oil change as soon as possible after break-in. I live 3 hours from the closest dealer, so I’m at ~2,500 miles. I’m at a conference so I scheduled the service while I’m in civilization. Once they got the truck, they told me the truck comes with Zinc in the oil that is supposed to be important to protecting and breaking in the motor and that I should wait until at least 5,000 miles. I haven’t seen this anywhere on the forums.

Anyone know if this is BS or accurate?

Trying to decide if I need to call back and ask them to do the oil change or wait until 5k.

Thanks!

This is all over the forum here… you will get many opinions from both sides of changing now or waiting - however ford will warranty anything done within specified intervals which states oil monitoring, etc around 10k miles and should be safe whenever you change before then.
Yes they have different additives in the factory oil - but again some people here will still charnge it like they have always done and is never bad to do maintenance early.

While I don't know for sure if original Ford oil has a zinc additive it is very common in oils that are marketed as break in oil. You could add some in after an early change, it's readily available.

Basically your dealer bypassed a chance for some profit in their belief that it would be better for your truck.

I dunno -- if a dealer is telling you NOT to come spend money with them, I might just accept their reasoning as the truth. Unless you have some "first X oil changes on us" package, but even still I'd think you'd be using up a free oil change needlessly.

The break in period for the 2.0 EB is 1,000 miles per the Owner's Manual. 5,000 is a lot.
I couldn't tell you whether an additive was put in the oil at the manufacturer but Ford states that they don't use break-in oil.

Thanks, all, for the replies. I also thought it was strange they didn’t want to take my money, but hopefully that’s a sign they’re giving me the right info.

I suggest looking at forum posts regarding Blackstone oil analysis results. That will tell you if zinc is present in the green-tinted OEM oil or not. My zinc levels were 719, with them considering a universal average to be 771. So my original oil had a lower zinc level than average.

I am on my second Maverick, both on the 1st oil change i found an abundance of metal flakes. This seems to be normal from break-in and casting flash. My thought is the sooner the better to remove the metal, I am sure the filter is doing it's job but still would rather remove the metal particles from the system.

Not sure I'd jump to that conclusion. If the dealer is short staffed (and who isn't) they may defer oil changes to have the technicians spend time on higher margin repairs.

I have my first oil change and recall work scheduled for next week. At 1800 miles oil life is 60%. Likely could push it to 3-4K, but rather pay for maintenance now than a bigger repair bill in 5 years.

You are aware that you can use any trusted mechanic to change you oil & filter. Just keep your receipts, in the event you have any engine trouble within the warranty period.

If I had an ecoboost, yeah, I would go ahead and change the oil, using whatever the user manual recommends for oil & filter for your model.

If the metal is in suspension the filter will catch it. I’ve tore down more new engines than I can count, don’t remember any extraordinary amount of metal particles in the oil.
They would wipe out your bearings.

Mine looked like regular oil when I changed it.

I'd relax about the 1st change. 2500 miles is a bit on the early side. I changed mine around 4K and I'm sticking to roughly that interval going forward, but I'm not going to loose any sleep if it happens to stretch to a 5K interval. The Ford maintenance minder will have you going 8-10k, but I think that is excessive for an ecoboost. Some think there is a urgency to get the original oil changed out, but I see that as just busy work. Even if there is some metal in the drain pan at the first change, the filter will easily get those out and it won't be hurting anything.
