If the metal is in suspension the filter will catch it. I’ve tore down more new engines than I can count, don’t remember any extraordinary amount of metal particles in the oil.
They would wipe out your bearings.
Correct, the filter should catch anything before it gets to the bearings but the oil pump has to pick up and push the oil to the filter first. MY22 ECO had larger aluminum flash flakes, MY24 HYBRID had a lot of smaller particles. It was very concerning at first but I have had zero issues so far. Sold the MY22 ECO with 37K miles to buy the MY24 Hybrid that now has 10K miles. Why are you tearing down so many new engines?

Just remember that Hybrid and the EB use different oils and different schedules. A hybrid at 5000 hase about 3000 ICE run miles.

I’ve poked around a bit on this already and decided to do the first oil change as soon as possible after break-in. I live 3 hours from the closest dealer, so I’m at ~2,500 miles. I’m at a conference so I scheduled the service while I’m in civilization. Once they got the truck, they told me the truck comes with Zinc in the oil that is supposed to be important to protecting and breaking in the motor and that I should wait until at least 5,000 miles. I haven’t seen this anywhere on the forums.

Anyone know if this is BS or accurate?

Trying to decide if I need to call back and ask them to do the oil change or wait until 5k.

Thanks!
I have a 2024 Maverick Hybrid. The dealer sticker where I purchased it says to change it at 5000 Miles or 15% Oil life. Right now at 6600 Miles oil life is only at 50%. I will change it sometime now and 10k miles. A non hybrid may require the oil change be done sooner

All my dealership would say is to watch the onboard computer and not to change it until within 500 miles. They didn't state anything in regards to it being a special high zinc formula. It is my understanding that few oils now carry zinc as it is highly destructive to catalytic converters so I would question Ford puts it in new vehicles. I hope someone can come up with a definitive answer.
Zinc kills platinum in the cat.

I started working in a research engine lab in 1985 and retired in 2023. We would have some testing that required weighing bearings and recording other very intricate measurements before testing. These same components would have the same measurements/dimensions recorded post test.
My point is that you might have some debris from initial manufacturing but if it’s laying in the sump the oil pump might not pick it up.
Sounds terrible but those unsuspended particles will only come out after a oil change and maybe not even all of them. If the pump picks those up later,
the filter is going to do it’s job.
If you change your oil frequently or at intervals that seem appropriate for you then good. I just wouldn’t exceed the recommended interval from Ford.

Huh? What special kind of madness is it than a Ford dealership is telling you not to change oil/filter when you want to/find convenient? I can only guess they were busy that day with other stuff and didn't want your business. I'd find another dealer.

The oil put into your 2.0EB at Hermosilla was 100% definitely 5w-30 Motorcraft Synblend, not some different 'break-in oil' with a higher-than-Synblend zinc content. It's a little old (2020 vintage), but PQIA data on MC 5w-30 Synblend with WSS-M2C961-A1 Ford spec was around ~800ppm zinc, and any 5w-30 WSS-M2C961-A1 spec oil will have that or maybe a little higher zinc in it.

Lots of folks use Mobil 1 or a variant of same - they've got enough zinc FWIW.

https://www.mobil.com/lubricants/-/...-1/pdf/emsga-mobil1productguide-v2-9-1-22.pdf

Change your oil when you want mileage-wise. If the oil bottle label has 'meets WSS-M2C961-A1 spec' on it (full syn, semi-syn, whatever) you're good. End of story.

Surest bet is to get oil sampled. If “dirty”, then change it.
Some argue the filter would clean the oil of particles. Question - if got oil sample from oil pan itself, sampled readings show metallic bits there, that’s odd if a filter cleaned it. Now I understand filter “microns“ ratings, so probably some smaller metals, contaminants flows thru, circulating thru out an engine. And returns to oil pan.

You're assuming that the sump picked it up, went through the filter, and ended up in the pan.

That varies widely on a Hybrid, depending on your driving conditions. In my situation with little highway driving, the ICE runs less than half the time. Mostly highway driving will run the ICE most of the time and will need more frequent changes. The OLM takes this into consideration when telling you it's time for an oil change.

I waited the full 10,000 before I got my first oil change. No problems.

Master mechanic Russ Evans from the ‘under the hood’ podcast claims manufacturers use a break in oil and to leave it in until vehicle calls for a change, then 5000 afterwards although for his personal vehicles he goes with 4000.

Am old school when it comes to oil changes I did 3 already am at 12k now and first was at 2500 second at 5000 and third at 8500 I have 12k now and oil change reminder just came on ??. Am guessing its because I did a lot of idling during the hot summer with the AC blasting, so why does ford say 10k if my oil reminder is on every time I start my truck its only 3500 miles since my last change, don't forget the hours your truck just idles. And why did FORD put a sticker on my windshield next change at 15k. I did my first at 2.5 and going to do it every 5k from now on.
