Unpopular opinion- I love the rotary shifter.
Lol I think this is the first time I've heard this. Don't have the truck yet so I can't give an opinion but my gut feeling is that I won't hate it nor love it

I was totally neutral on the shifter, figured I'd wait until my truck arrives and see how I felt about it. I'm a fan now, just had to learn Left for Park, Right for Drive. I did flub it the first time I tried to reverse, put it in P instead and couldn't get it to go, lol, but just a learning curve issue. I already much prefer the dial to a traditional shifter. Easier.

Look first. Then shift. There, that wasn't so hard.
Can you imagine the complaints we'd hear if Ford built the Maverick with only a manual transmission? You mean I have to coordinate accelerator, clutch, and shifter simultaneously? Couldn't they invent something simplier?
Now I want a manual with a dial shifter!!!!

I liked the Chrysler push button except for the time we had to drive home in reverse from the local drive in movie theater.
Now I want a manual with a dial shifter!!!!
My late best friend had a 71 F-150 short bed with a 390 and a granny 4 speed with a shift lever that would go round and round 🤪 He was the only one that could drive it.
We fixed it by replacing the granny with a good old C6. A couple of weeks later some dirty bastard stole it. Should have left that rotary shift granny in it😡

Only people that can truly love a rotary shifter are bean counters. Removes content and saves money. Thats it.
One who has ever been a manual transmission person usually misses the stalk.

I’m with @BradnChristine , I spin it a bunch of clicks to the Right without looking to get into Drive then a bunch of clicks to the Left to get into Park. It is OK but not ideal.

But the muscle memory is slow to form (even after 1.5 years), I wish it had hard stops with heavier clicks so you could feel that click-click-CLUNK when go you from park to drive.

Column shifters for automatics that you have to pull towards you then down to select drive or reverse, console lever shifters with a thumb button that unlocks the move from P to R or D, manuals with gate patterns — all of these have more muscle movements and kinetic sensations that give the transmission selections a unique identity that we are missing in the dial.

I'm waiting for someone to modify it for those cool new extended shifters that all the Gymkhana enthusiasts use

I can see it happening, somehow...
Dang I miss Ken Block & his videos. 😢 I could watch him tear around in that hoonicorn Mustang all day long....he (& it!) was one-of-kind. RIP my friend.

Half of my previous vehicles were manual, so I don't have a strong opinion about the rotary shifter. You have to touch it for a grand total of about 3 seconds each time you drive, big deal. It is nice to have more room around the center console though.

I would 100% buy a manual.

Dont
The shifter detents could definitely be a lot more positive. The dial shifter in my 2015 Ram 1500 was pretty chunky. And the shifter had stops at P and D. I never mis-shifted in that truck.

I did have an embarrassing moment in the Mav though. I was going through an automated carwash and didn't get the shifter all the way in N. I started rolling forward while the truck was on the belt and the attendant hit the emergency stop. She started screaming at me but I couldn't hear her over the carwash noise. Oops lol
Don't feel bad. I'm old enough to remember when a simple automatic transmission, AC and an 8-track deck were expensive options. Lol

At gun point I wouldn't take a manual. I enjoyed driving them in my youth, but as you age remembering brake and gas is good enough, all that other motion, even if deeply embedded muscle memory, is a waste. Let the tech do it.

I’m not sure why anyone worries about finding park. Drive to the spot you are going to park the truck and shut it off. Hardly ever need neutral. Drive and reverse is all I care about.
