When I originally heard of the Mav and Santa Cruz I felt that that Ford nailed the mark while Hyundai was a big question mark as to what they were thinking. After having seen a Santa Cruz in the wild I now understand and see what Hyundai was going for and I think it's really just the front end that makes it looks so big and clunky. If they slimmed down the front and made it less round shaped, and also made it a little more customizable with more vibrant colors etc. I think they would have hit a home run in the other direction and captured more of that "lifestyle" niche. I definitely would have considered a Santa Cruz if this were the case.

I, too, was completely disenchanted with the color options on the Santa Cruz.

All very muted and washed out looking. Haven't seen enough in person to put in the final verdict in but I'm not a big fan. Might be able to live with the white or black one. I think the others are no-go.

I'm a Hot Pepper Red kind of guy. The Santa Cruz colors available made it clear the vehicle is catering to a different kind of buyer than myself.

Picking up my Maverick any week now.

IDK, what I wanted had a lot more to do with the drive train (hybrid) than it did aesthetic/color choices. The price point for what you can achieve with the Maverick in MPG made the Santa Cruz a non-contender for me.

Used cars in muted and washed- out colors sell higher than ones in bright or vibrant colors. And a lot of buyers- especially here for whatever reason- are buying the car they want to trade in. Same as the housing market- people are buying the house to sell in ten years, not live in for thirty or forty or more.

Complete idiocy, but that's what growing up in such a market- focused society gets us. Everything is about maximizing value instead of just driving the car you really want.

I wouldn't call it idiocy to take into consideration the future financial ramifications of your decisions today.

On the housing issue, very very few people buy one house and live in it for the rest of their lives. Jobs move, families grow and shrink, etc. There are plenty of valid reasons to buy a new house. I think you'd be idiotic not to consider resale value even if you have no current plans to sell

Same. Although a truck does offer some utility for our lifestyle and hobbies, we weren't even considering one as our next vehicle until the Maverick was announced. Would have been looking at another compact, likely a hybrid or EV (prius, corolla, leaf) and we weren't even needing to look for another 2yrs or so. Maverick simply checked a lot of boxes, at the pricepoint we were looking for.

Had Hyundai launched a hybrid at a similar pricepoint, we would have absolutely gone with it over the Ford (well, not sure I could get over the Santa Cruz looks). I do like some of the Maverick color choices (we ordered A51), but that is not even a factor. My extended family has had amazing experiences with Hyundai vehicles (5 of them, practically bulletproof for us), this will be our first Ford.

Maybe Santa Cruz targets a different section of market from mine. My choice of Maverick over SC on:
  1. Design: MC is clever on borrowing a lot of F-series design elements. It also use more male-oriented color scheme, like the low-saturated/washed-out colors of A51, CG, etc. Thus it doesn't look like toy. On the other hand, SC's design like rounded side view and the color like powder blue, don't seems to be attractive to (older) male. I'm not saying sexism. But truck buyers are most older male.
  2. Pricing/Fuel Economy: SC should have cut off some features and cut the price 1.5-2K down. For example, the expensive roll-down tonneau cover.
If SC had changed one of the above two things, I'd almost certain jump ship to get one, given the current supply situation of Maverick.

The problem with the Santa Cruz is that they were trying to stay true to the concept truck, but at the same time copy over as much of the new Tucson as they could, so the design got compromised.

I have the SC Limited, I've commented a few times on this forum that I really like the SC. Yet I am still awaiting the Maverick I have on order - I want to be able to do a side x side compare in my driveway and on my neighboring streets. I am 99% confident that I will like the SC Limited much more because of the FANTASTIC tech and creature features... I probably will keep both; regardless that I am single and no other drivers in the home or nearby. I think the SC will be a better Highway cruise and the Maverick, if my Hybrid comes in, will be the best for city driving.

People that buy boring colored things like that is what is wrong with society. It is what breeds fear, hatred, war, greed, laziness, racism, resentment, and all the rest.

Its the same reason people dont sing in public or help strangers on the street. or dedicate themselves to something that will never benefit them. They are afraid of their own lives, not for their life, but of their life.

First Ford for me as well! My learner car was an original 91 Saturn, and then my first car was a Toyota Matrix followed by a Rav4. Like you, I wasn't even thinking about a truck and was considering an electric but the charge grid for the long road trips I do isn't very conducive as of yet. When I saw the Mav and realized I could get fuel economy AND tow my bike, that was just a done-deal for me.

Obligatory ayyyy area 51 gang! Hope we both get ours soon.

This 8s actually not true. Cars with unique colors (at least, the main ones like yellow, red, probably blue) have the highest resale values. They may take longer to sell, but sell for more. Someone that wants yellow is going to pay a premium.

Prime example. Just bought my wife a used 2015 Fiat 500 abarth, white convertible. Love it, growls like a beast.

I would have jumped to pay more for a powder blue or yellow version, and even would've traveled anywhere in the US for the privilege. but those are basically unicorns, there are probably only a few hundred even in existence (only about 35 500 abarth convertibles for sale in the whole country when I was looking). So white it was.

You care correct about resale, but I think the truck market is different. The used truck market attracts a younger, more adventurous type than the new truck market. Brighter colors won't be a problem on used trucks

If it looked more like a truck I would have really been interested even at the higher price point because I like their 10/100K warranty. My wifes Hyundai Santa Fe is 10 years old / 150K and has only had two issues in the last 10 years that happened after the warranty ran out. It's a solid car - definitely better materials inside than the Maverick. One issue was a $1K fix and the other a $500 fix.
