I checked my oil cap from cold, after 10 minutes idling from cold (temp gauge highest blue area), then drove 5 minutes down the road at low speeds and rechecked (temp gauge lowest white area), then drove 20 miles at highway speeds (temp gauge middle white) and checked again. Ambient air temps were 25-30F, original oil from factory, about 4000 miles on the odometer... not seeing any peanut butter.

Good. Because that would mean someone was sabotaging your Maverick.

It's only normal to see a form of non-edible mayonnaise.

I visited my Dad, who was moonlighting as a Mechanic at Sears.. He showed me that "Oil & Water" Don't Mix..

Your dad was wrong.
Oil and water are mixed in the mayonnaise you put on your sandwich.

Soaps and detergents, including the detergent additives in engine oil, and the egg in the mayonnaise on your sandwich are emulsifiers. Among other things they break down oil into submicroscopic "bubbles" that will mix with water.

Mine does it at 56,000 miles.
A little bit at 40°F.
A little more at 30°F.

Never much colder than that but there's dozens of posts that the effect is more pronounced the colder you go and the shorter the drive cycles.

One hot cycle and it's gone.

Water, antifreeze and oil building up to peanut butter on the inside of any engines oil cap
Cannot be a good thing under any conditions.

Many have already chimed in that they do not have this condition happening in their hybrid engines.

I’d like to see a poll showing a ratio of water mixing with oil and those without.

Retired 40 year auto tech that's common during cold weather driving short trips, if your losing coolant ask them to perform a chemical block test procedure that dectects exhaust gases in cooling system. It's a noninvasive simple test

Replacing an engine under warranty can make their month, they are definitely incentivized. To call them paper pushers is just plain wrong- they aren't out in the shop twisting wrenches but there is A LOT more to that job than most people would imagine.

Indeed. My sister worked at a Toyota dealership while going to college, there is a lot going on there. The dealership changed owners while she was there, a lot changed almost overnight. Some of it fishy, some of it legit, it all comes down to how the franchise ownership and managers do things.

My experience is with 2 blown head gaskets back in the late '70's and early '80's. Both times my first indication there was a problem I could smell antifreeze in the cab because the compression leaked into the coolant system and blew antifreeze out the over flow tank. Antifreeze was not in the engine oil. You will not go far with a blown head gasket blowing the coolant out. I doubt OP has a blown head gasket. For what its worth my oil cap looks fine. My typical trip is 35 miles. 20 of that is freeway. And I live in a mild climate. Keep in mind typically 1.5 gallons of water goes through the combustion chamber with every 1 gallon of gas burned. Surely some of that gets past the piston rings.

I did not realize there is that much water - thanks! Of course, that water is a byproduct of combustion and not coming from the the coolant system.

But still another reason for us “short trippers” to change our oil per the “severe use” interval.

Sure, our OLM is supposed to recognize that severe use and calculate oil life remaining % accordingly….hopefully it is more accurate than the “miles to empty” calculations

It it forms while sitting and cooling down - would it make sense to remove the cap after a drive & wipe it clean? Then replace the cap. Do it often enough and no mayo?

That's the procedure if you have the occasional OCD.

I am not an engine expert, however I have made countless trips of 2 miles or less in less than 30 degree weather. Just checked the oil cap and it looks perfect. If I saw what the op saw, I trust cherokee's advice and get it back to the dealer. I just couldn't resist saying something after reading all the pages on this. Besides the extra furr in the engine compartment made my day.

Have you noticed any abnormal white smoke from the exhaust? Definitely does not look good that's for sure.

Confirmed no white smoke on the next colder morning when it would run a bit longer - so that means open loop even during the cat warmup.
