The Ecoboost 2.0 was notorious for gulping coolant and blowing engines (Ecoboom) until the redesign used in the original Maverick EB and refreshed in 2025.

The Atkinson in our Hybrids have never suffered from coolant intrusion as far as I know - which is not very far admittedly:)

Take a small sample of the oil and send it off to an Oil Analysis lab. It will tell you exactly what all is in the oil INCLUDING moisture content. I use Blackstone Laboratories Inc in the Fort Wayne area. Money well spent if you want your engine to last.

I’m sending in a sample soon because I suspect oil dilution caused by gasoline. Gasoline naturally enters the oil in trace amounts during normal operations - but too much can cause long term issues.

There is a TSB for my VIN for oil dilution and my oil cap smells of gas.

Coolant intrusion is a whole different and catastrophic problem. If your oil sample shows coolant intrusion - time to gather your maintenance records for the warranty (hopefully) engine rebuild.

So I'm going to keep my eye on it as I've done a lot of short trips this winter.

Was the issue with your cat-a-lytic converter?
It seems excessively furry.
Your engine bay may be low on Meow Mix.
Good luck

The real stupidity is the service writer never touches the work, he/she is a paper pusher.
Replacing an engine does not affect his/her paycheck one bit.
Tell me you've never worked at a dealership without saying you've never worked at a dealership.

No kidding, I like that he thinks the service writer makes that call. Vehicle is inspected by tech, dealership warranty rep talks to Ford, and warranty people at Ford decide.

I checked my oil cap. In Central Ohio where we’ve been under a foot of snow and below freezing temps for the last 3 weeks.

At 13,100 miles I’ve got no emulsion milkshake going on

I checked my oil cap from cold, after 10 minutes idling from cold (temp gauge highest blue area), then drove 5 minutes down the road at low speeds and rechecked (temp gauge lowest white area), then drove 20 miles at highway speeds (temp gauge middle white) and checked again. Ambient air temps were 25-30F, original oil from factory, about 4000 miles on the odometer... not seeing any peanut butter.

The original poster noted coolant loss and oil that isn't oily in the cap. Maybe the coolant ran down into the felted cover and is hidden, maybe the PB is just harmless condensation from his particular pattern of use. Maybe he has a defect from the factory that needs remedied and is causing coolant to dilute the oil. I don't know... but I'm hesitant to tell them to just write it off and not to worry. 🤷‍♂️

It's what came from the factory, haven't done an oil change yet as it's still at 20% according to the oil life monitor. I'm also not missing any coolant...

So it lets antifreeze mix with engine oil?
Really ?
Does the hybrid ICE in winter run so cold the oil and compression rings don’t reach a proper warm engine temp so they can swell up and seal up ?

Someone with 70, 80, or 90,000 miles on their hybrid needs to look under that cap and tell me it’s normal. o_O
First time I saw that "Mess"..
I visited my Dad, who was moonlighting as a Mechanic at Sears.. He showed me that "Oil & Water" Don't Mix..

Stop being obtuse.

Mine did it at 10,000 miles.
Mine does it at 56,000 miles.

A little bit at 40°F.
A little more at 30°F.

Never much colder than that but there's dozens of posts that the effect is more pronounced the colder you go and the shorter the drive cycles.

One hot cycle and it's gone.

NORMAL.

I bet you drive yours more than 5 or 10 minutes a day. Some people, at least some of the time do not.
