Hybrid Oil change Overfilled @ filter

Hey y’all, I f***ed up

Doing my oil change on my hybrid. Pre-filled new filter to about 80% capacity (just under where the threads start) and forgot to account for this when adding oil up top. Added about 5.6 qts of new oil (by eyeing the markings on side of oil containers) and realized too late I hadn’t subtracted the amount of oil in filter. Haven’t started the truck and still on ramps, but here’s what the dip stick is showing. Wondering if I should be ok, or I should remove some. If so, how. Loosen filter to let some drain?

You could loosen the drain plug and let it flow out for literally one second. Then recheck and fill a small amount if needed.

If it were me, I'd partially back out the drain plug to drain off the excess(I know, it will make a mess), wait a few minutes and recheck the level. I also check again after backing off the ramps. I'm a better safe than sorry guy.

I would not worry about the amount of oil in a filter. Spread out in an oil pan, you are not going to notice the rise that would create.

That said, I can't tell from your pic how far over or under you are. It took me forever to get a valid reading on my Ecoboost. I'd triple-check that level, and if it really does seem overfilled, do as the previous poster said, and let a little out via the drain plug.

Why do folks prefill the oil filter when it's so small🤏 ?
Really there is no practical advantage on a gas engine with such a small oil filter.
I'm guessing it's a feel-good kind of thing.

It'll be fine, just drive it. There's a tolerance in there, difference between low dot and high dot is 1 qt I believe. As long as its not over the top dot you should be fine.

You could put a tube down the dipstick hole and draw a few ounces out. Much less mess. Harbor freight sells a brake bleeder kit that will do it. Very inexpensive

I mean, being a little over full is better than being under full but neither should cause any catastrophic damage to the engine as long as it's showing on the dipstick I would just start it and let it idle for a couple seconds then shut off and recheck level after a minute or two. This usually causes the level on the dipstick to drop slightly as the new oil gets circulated by the oil pump. so if you're slightly over it would probably drop it down to the correct level without having to try to drain some out which always causes a mess in my experience. Thanks y’all for the replies. Ended up draining some from the bolt. I expected an oily mess but on the contrary, hardly any oil seeped past the threads as I loosened until I unthreaded the entire plug and just held it in place. Wasn’t gushing out like I thought. Probably because I hadn’t started the engine yet and pressure hadn’t built up.

Get 1 of these! It's perfect for what u want to do and no mess from too much coming out the drain plug. I use it for mowers, tractors and my diesel SxS that I would have to remove the skid plate to get to the drain plug.

Perhaps from the days of bigger engines and bigger filters.
Though it is interesting the difference between factory filter and stated filter to use.
Does the EB do the same thing?

I’ve been doing oil changes on vehicles since ‘75’, that’s 1975 for you pups. Always been told to add some oil to filter and gasket, not much oil, just enough for initial start up. I would LOVE for someone here to tell me that now new engines would NOT benefit from this procedure. Still willing to accept new ideas and proof.
