You can get a current gear readout with a scanguage III if the Forescan codes are a dead end. I have one in my XL and it works great.

Correct, I see the same 70 for park, 60 for reverse, etc. but when in drive I see the actual gear numbers.

How loud is it? I haven't really noticed any thunking on mine at any speed, but I also haven't really been listening for it. Currently at 11K miles. It doesn't really get consistently cold enough down here for me to test if there are any temp-related changes, unfortunately.

yeah, my back seat has been used for passengers on occasion, but it's main use is to be lockable dry storage. It also serves as my changing room after races. Nothing better than putting on some clean, dry underwear after racing dirt bikes in the summer heat for two hours.
