However, police officers are legally empowered to use deception and other types of lies during interrogations. This ability originates from the 1969 Supreme Court case Frazier v. Cupp, which ruled specific police lies were permissible.
I had a similar experience when growing up when a neighbor who was a cop told me and my friends to not answer cops questions if we got in trouble.
He said they will make it sound like they are trying to help you when in fact they are seeking incriminating evidence.
