I am continuously getting these terrible water marks on my windshield (reoccurring since I took it home). I have managed to get rid of them several times by painstakingly clay bar and hand polishing them but within a couple of weeks it comes back. Any tips to keep this from happening or explanation as to why it's happening?

I wash this truck and 3 other vehicles every month or so and have no issues with water marks on the other vehicles.

The original windshield on my truck was the same way. I've never had a windshield on any other car do that... total junk.

I think I had clay barred it several times and took a polishing wheel with compound to it. After like 8 months and several treatments of that, it finally started to bead up more normally.

That's nasty! Have you spoken to the dealer about it? I'd try using some distilled water in the wipers and see if it does the same thing. That should have no dissolved solids in it.

Haven't seen anything like that. Have you tried using vinegar and a netted sponge?

I have not taken it to the dealer yet because I assumed they would tell me it's my fault. I also tried vinegar to no avail

A bunch of varieties of glass stripper are available, this one looks like it's available at Autozone as well as Amazon. Might be easier than using a clay bar next time it happens.

After cleaning it, it might be worth considering at least hitting the glass with a ton of Rain-X to see if it prevents it from reoccuring. Or follow up with a ceramic glass coating.

Search Amazon for "ceramic glass coating" and other varieties will come up as well. It isn't cheap, but I don't know how many times I'd want to put that effort into cleaning that windshield before it drove me to eventually try the good stuff. My patience would wear thin.

it would be a shame if a rock were to "accidentally" crack your windshield tomorrow.

That is so weird. I've seen hard water do that but nothing like that. There are a few video's on YouTube on differnt products and methods to get that off but for you its only a temporay fix. Did this happen on your previous car. If nit mayne the glass is defective.

Clean the devil out of the windshield, then treat it with Rain-X twice.

Maybe you have some over spray from a painter, concrete sealant, or some non water soluble something. The cleanest I have ever seen my auto glass inside and out was when I had a rock chip my glass and I took it to the glass shop (independent not chain) and had the rock chip repaired. Along with that I told them to check all the glass. Don't have any idea about cost since my SF INS pays 100% on rock chip repair. I do have more trouble cleaning the inside of my windshield due to the accumulation of stuff off the plastic "evaporating" and condensing on it than on the outside. I do use rainx 2 in 1 washer fluid and turn wiper wash on immediately after hitting bugs before they dry or about twice a week just to refresh the rain on the windshield. Water just beads and blows off in light to medium rains without turning wipers on.

I'll 2nd the Invisible Glass cleaner. I had spots on mine at delivery that just didn't want to wipe off, and that stuff took them right off. Might as well hit the side glass as well, as I'd venture to say they have some, if the windshield is that bad. Glass sealer really does help prevent that crud from reaccumulating. I used Aquapel several months ago, and not so much as a hint of water spots since.

Check your hood & roof, even after PDI I had some water spots from shipping, and used Meguiar's water spot remover to remove them easily, apply their Hybrid Ceramic Wax every few months to keep them from returning.

I'm also in NJ, just in the southern end of the state.

I've seen similar caused by automated car wash residue, typically a couple weeks after when using their most expensive option with "ceramic" and/or "paint sealant" in the description. Hand wash and don't use any wax type products on the windshield unless it's a windshield specific product.
